FLIGHTS to some regional areas will be slashed by more than 50 per cent as Rex Airlines and Qantas experience significant falls in demand due to coronavirus.

Rex Airlines today announced they would cut services by 45 per cent nationally, which will result in approximately 74 return flights per week cut across SA.

Rex flights to Port Augusta will be suspended from April 6, while the airline’s Kangaroo Island to Adelaide route will cease from July 1.

Services to Ceduna, Coober Pedy, Mildura, Mount Gambier, Port Lincoln and Whyalla will also be reduced from April 6 – some experiencing flight reductions of more than 50 per cent.

Rex’s strategy and sales mananger Warrick Lodge said the company was appreciative of the support from many councils who had approached Rex to waiver airport charges.

“Rex promises to also stand by these local councils in their moment of adversity when Rex is solidly back on its feet,” Mr Lodge said.

Qantas will cut flights to Whyalla, Port Lincoln and Kangaroo Island, from March 29.

Services between Adelaide and Whyalla will be slashed from 23 to seven return flights per week.

Port Lincoln will also only have seven return services.

Qantas will lower its return services to Kangaroo Island to three per week.
