Maitland woman charged over near $190,000 theft from elderly Reid woman

A woman from a tiny country South Australian town allegedly stole a small fortune from an elderly woman over the course of three years.

A woman from a tiny town on the Yorke Peninsula is the alleged perpetrator of a long-running rip-off scheme of an elderly woman which netted her almost $200,000.

Sylvia Rita Gileff, 48, of Maitland, has been charged with two counts of dishonestly dealing with property without the owner’s consent over the scheme.

Both of those charges are, according to court documents, aggravated by two factors – the age of the alleged victim, and the fact Ms Gileff was in some kind of relationship with them.

According to those documents, the alleged rip-off happened for nearly four years between January 2016 and November 2019.

Police will allege it left Reid woman Nina Minenko out of pocket to the tune of $187,621.84.

One of the charges Ms Gileff faces relates to “permanently depriving (Mrs Minenko) or making a serious encroachment on (Mrs Minenko’s) proprietary rights” for a total of $145,399.84.

The second of those charges relates to an alleged swindle of $42,220.00.

Ms Gileff was arrested in September last year on the charges and faced the Elizabeth Magistrates Court the following month.

Due to the amount of money Ms Gileff is alleged to have stolen, her matter has been bumped into the Adelaide Magistrates Court because of its seriousness.

She faced the Adelaide court on Wednesday where Magistrate Simon Smart heard the Department of Public Prosecutions were seeking details from 68-year-old Mrs Minenko and analysing her bank accounts.

They would need two weeks to compile those details, the court heard.

“They’re seeking more details from the victim in order to be able to better prescribe the offending,” a prosecutor said.

Counsel for Ms Gileff told the court her office had recently taken on the case and were awaiting details from prosecutors and instead requested a longer adjournment.

Mr Smart ordered Ms Gileff to next face court in March and gave prosecutors a final deadline to make a charge determination.
