A kayaker has had a terrifying encounter with a great white shark at Port Augusta.
In an image uploaded to the Whyalla Fishing Page on Facebook, a photo shows the apex predator breach the water’s surface with its mouth open in an attempt to bite the kayaker’s oar.
A second photo show’s the shark’s head under the water and the kayaker’s oar again, as the big fish appears to be circling the small vessel.
A caption with the post reads: “Kingies still on the chew at Port Augusta but so are the whites. Mate just had a close call at the Port in a Kayak. Shark shield now on the to buy list.”
There have been zero fatal shark attacks recorded at Port Augusta in South Australia’s history, although a 16-year-old girl lost her life to a great white down the road at Port Pirie in 1884.
The girl was reportedly pulled under the water by the predator while swimming.
Comments on the post ranged from “I think he needs a bigger boat” to “no thanks on the kayak”.
