Dylan Pedler sexually abused 16-year-old girl after picking her up from the side of the road

A man has shown ‘no remorse’ for picking up a child from the side of the road, getting her drunk and having sex with her despite her saying no, a court heard.

A predator picked up a 16-year-old girl from the side of the road, got her drunk and forcefully had sex with her despite her saying no, a court heard.

Dylan Wayne Pedler, 30, plied the underage girl with alcohol before the degrading sexual abuse took place.

Mollie McKendrick, for the prosecution, told the District Court on Tuesday Pedler had shown no remorse for his offending and his prospects of rehabilitation were “significantly guarded”.

“The complainant did give evidence about the fact she said no to the defendant,” she said.

“There was a degree of force and a degree of degradation in the way the matter occurred.”

During Pedler’s trial, Ms McKendrick told the court Pedler used the fake name “Daniel” when he and his co-accused picked up two girls and told them he had a girlfriend in order to gain their trust.

“He picked her (the victim) up with the sole intention of grooming her by gaining her trust with alcohol,” Ms McKendrick said.

“After driving around town (he) took the girls to a bottle shop where they purchased 24 cans of Smirnoff Black, a beverage with two standard alcoholic drinks per can.”

The court heard Pedler’s victim repeatedly told him she was 16 and had a boyfriend in an effort to stop his sexual advances.

The court heard police allege the victims were given drugs by Pedler’s co-accused before he allegedly took the 14-year-old into a bedroom and Mr Pedler followed the 16-year-old into a shed behind the house.

“It was in the shed where he grabbed her by the hips and started touching her,” Ms McKendrick said.

“He then turned her around and bent her over a white object.”

Pedler was found guilty by a jury in the Port Augusta District Court in December of three charges of unlawful sexual intercourse.

Craig Caldicott, for Pedler, argued during the trial that his client believed the victim was over the age of 17.

“Maybe we wouldn’t be here if Mr Pedler had sent them some flowers,” he said.

Mr Caldicott told the District Court on Tuesday Pedler had previously worked as a concreter before being taken into custody and hoped to take over his father’s business once released.

Mr Caldicott said Pedler was a good partner and father to his two children and asked for leniency in sentencing, due to being away from his family in Port Lincoln prison.

Judge Michael Durrant adjourned the charges until next month, where victim impact statements will be heard.
