Work on a $5m makeover of the northern part of Prospect Rd began this week and Port Adelaide Enfield Mayor Claire Boan says it’s part of a push to attract visitors to the area.
While the southern end of Prospect Rd is known as one of Adelaide’s premier dining and shopping destinations, the northern end in the suburbs of Blair Athol and Kilburn has never drawn the same attention.
But Ms Boan said council was hopeful this can be changed.
“We’re really excited about this project as it’s much-needed for the local community and to attract visitors to the area,” she said.
“We’re hoping to make it a destination shopping area.”
The revamp of Prospect Rd between Way St and Kintore Ave has been designed to make the strip more pedestrian friendly, while also providing opportunity for more outdoor dining and events.
Included in the project is a large community space which could be closed temporarily for small events at Gladstone Ave and improved landscaping and opportunity for outdoor dining near Kintore, Jersey and Hopetoun avenues, along with Clifton St.
Increased tree planting is also planned for the median of Prospect Rd.
Ms Boan said the project was expected to have a quick turnaround, with work scheduled to be complete by the end of the year.
She said council would be working closely with local businesses to ensure the opportunities to attract more visitors to the area was maximised.
