St Peter’s season is back on track after a victory over Trinity away, setting up a mouth-watering clash this weekend with undefeated Rostrevor.

TRINITY 5.7 (37)

St Peter’s coach Sam Elliott said his side will have to overcome its sluggish starts if it is to have a chance of beating undefeated Rostrevor this weekend.

Saints prevailed by 52 points in their round three clash against Trinity away on Saturday but Elliott said the players would have to ensure they get out of the blocks quickly against Rostrevor.

Elliott said Morgan Ferres sparked St Peter’s into action against Trinity after the forward switched into the midfield.

“We just got the job done and we move on,” Elliott said.

“They started really, really well and kicked the first four goals.

“We were pretty sluggish but after that we got the game on our terms and played pretty good footy.

“We are starting to learn to change momentum before a break, the boys are recognising it on-field.

“Morgan Ferres is super impressive.

“He was at full-forward, but we lost the first four clearances, so he just injected himself into the middle of the ground and we won the next two.”

Ferres, Max Blacker, Luke Harvey, Cormac Dwyer, Fergus Carruthers and Fraser Bone were best on for St Peter’s.

Elliott said the players were looking forward to hosting Rostrevor in what was expected to be one of the matches of the year.

“We’ve just got to be ready to go a bit earlier,” Elliott said.

“It’s an attitude thing and something we will learn by.

“I was really impressed by the Year 11 boys who really stood up and showed us what they are about, in particular Max Blacker.

“It is great for the competition to have Rostrevor up and going, they are well-coached and we are really looking forward to it.”

Trinity was best served by Cody Gilchrist, Jordan Kotsano, Sebastian Walling, Bailey Hoare and Cam Rogers.

Kotsano finished with three majors, while Liam Fawcett kicked two.

ROSTREVOR 23.12 (150)

PEMBROKE 2.8 (20)

A seven-goal masterclass to Rostrevor’s Brandon Jackson-Martin helped the side to a commanding 130-point victory over Pembroke at home on Saturday.

The hosts proved way too strong, prevailing 23.12 (150) to 2.8 (20).

Jackson-Martin, who was named best on ground, was given plenty of support inside 50 with Jack Hodges kicking four.

Will Anning, Jayden Gale, Harvey Pedler and Jesse Trevor booted two goals each.

Max Michalanney, Tyson Walls and Hodges were also named in the best.

The victory was Rostrevor’s third in a row with the side joining Sacred Heart in being the only undefeated sides so far this season.

Rostrevor coach James Allan was pleased with the win but said the scoreboard did not reflect how close the match was.

“On paper it looks like we won really comfortably,” Allan said.

“But we were a bit slow to get going and probably didn’t click into gear until halfway through the second quarter.

“After that it was a pretty strong performance.”

Allan also praised Jackson-Martin’s display.

“If you had told me at the start of the year he would’ve been playing in our First side I probably would’ve laughed but to his credit he’s done a lot of work himself,” Allan said.

“He’s always seeking feedback.

“He plays as a tall forward and swaps into the ruck for us but also almost plays as a midfielder when he’s in there.

“He got his reward on the weekend with seven goals but he also gave four or five off which was even more pleasing.”

Allan said the test would come when the team takes on St Peter’s this weekend.

“We think we face a real big challenge this week,” Allan said.

“We are under no illusion some of our games are going to be harder than what we’ve faced and that’s no disrespect to the teams we have played.

“We’ve got some of the traditionally strong teams coming up.

“We are in good form but we are going to have to be at our best this week to compete against Saints.”

SACRED HEART 21.14 (140)

WESTMINSTER 7.8 (50)

Sacred Heart remains undefeated after a strong victory against Westminster away on Saturday.

Hearts enjoyed a “powerful performance” according to coach Jon Symonds to prevail 21.14 (140) to 7.8 (50).

Luca Whitelum led the way up-forward, kicking a bag of four, while Will Patton, Jacob Owens, Jaiden Magor and Angus Bradley all booted three goals each.

Tyson Coe, Jacob Lochowiak, Luke Dewhirst, Angus Bradley and Adam Bunworth were also prolific for the visitors.

Symonds said his side’s “fast and effective” ball movement early was the catalyst for the result.

“Given the tight contest between these two sides last year, we approached the game with a clear intent to put our imprint on this contest right from the start of the game,” he said.

“Pleasingly we did exactly that, bursting out of the blocks with some fast and effective movement of the ball which delivered us a six-goal to nil lead at quarter time.

“We continued this momentum into the second quarter to kick another six goals and head into half-time with a comfortable nine-goal lead.

“Our ability to run to space and create multiple disposal options was excellent as was our disposal efficiency throughout the game.

“Defensively we stood up well all day against a determined opponent who kept having a decent, competitive crack in all aspects of the game throughout all four quarters.”

Hearts take on Trinity at home this Saturday.

SCOTCH 22.11 (143)

ST MICHAEL’S 10.10 (70)

A whopping 11 goals from Zac Becker helped Scotch beat St Michael’s at home on Saturday.

Becker’s masterclass up-forward led to a 22.11 (143) to 10.10 (70) victory.

Oscar Turnbull and Cormack O’Reilly chipped in with three goals apiece.

The triumph has helped Scotch keep in touch with the top teams and have a 2-1 record.

O’Reilly, Becker, Hugo Kittel, Campbell Thompson and Oscar Turnbull were best on ground for Scotch.

Scotch coach Ben Nelson said his side kicked five late goals to push the margin out.

“The final scoreline wasn’t reflective of how close the game was,” he said.

“It was a lot closer during the game and it was a bit of a battle in the midfield but we were able to rotate quite a few players through there.

“We had quite a few of our midfielders missing so that provided some opportunities for some new guys and they really stepped up which was encouraging.

“Maintaining our pressure on St Mick’s for four quarters was what gave us a good opportunity to finish off the game well.”

Nelson said the win would help boost his players’ confidence and belief in their abilities.

“I think Saints, PAC, Rostrevor and Sacred Heart have always been the top four schools so we look forward to the challenges of playing those big schools,” he said.

“They’re enjoying their footy and maintaining the effort in the areas around defence and team support will help give us every chance.”

For St Michael’s, Jordan Hodges, skipper Adam D’Aloia, Finn Higham, Charlie Blair, Michael Parente and Daniel Irish battled hard.

Hodges was strong up-forward with five goals, while D’Aloia kicked two.

PRINCE ALFRED 17.18 (120)

IMMANUEL 9.5 (59)

The reigning premier also moves to a 2-1 record after a commanding triumph against Immanuel.

Prince Alfred flexed its muscles to enjoy a 17.18 (120) to 9.5 (59) win against Immanuel at home.

The Reds stopped Immanuel from claiming its second victory of the season.

Harry McInnes put on a best on ground performance, booting eight goals.

James Reuther chipped in with two majors, while Isaiah Wilksch, Jack Grosser and Kyan Saunders also battled strongly.
