A former Crow and SANFL premiership captain has joined an Adelaide Footy League club for season 2025.

Woodville-West Torrens legend Luke Thompson, who also played 20 AFL games for the Crows, has joined division two club Flinders Park after retiring from SANFL footy.

Thompson played 256 League games and won three premierships – two as captain – with the Eagles.

The club’s longest serving captain (2015-2022), Thompson said the decision to step away was a tough one to make.

“It took a while to make the decision but I had a few conversations with my wife about what the future looked like over the past couple years and the fact we’ve got two kids now and I couldn’t give enough of my time to SANFL footy definitely played a part,” he said.

“I couldn’t speak highly enough of the club and the people involved – to be there for 15 years, be the longest serving captain and win three premierships is pretty special.

“I was probably always going to join Flinders Park when left the Eagles.

“There’s a bit of a family connection there, my brother played there for a number of years and I know president Sam Snowdon very well.”

Thompson had been present at a number of Flinders Park games in recent seasons, especially during his brother, Scott’s career with the club.

The star backman said he was looking forward to being part of a family club and enjoying a more relaxed approach to the game.

“I’ve already caught up with a few of the players and we’re all ready to get going.

“I’m looking forward to being a bit more relaxed and also having a bit more time at home with my family.

“The club is also really welcoming and there’s a great family atmosphere there which is important.”

Flinders Park has experienced a solid run of success in recent seasons, winning the division three premiership in 2023 and making division two finals this year.

The Reds boast a young list which is supported by stars such as former SANFL brothers James, Nic and Tom Schwarz.

Thompson hoped his leadership and experience could help to take the side to new heights.

“I’m hoping to contribute in any way I can whether that’s leading some of the young guys and showing them what it takes to be the best they can or just setting standards with my work ethic and training,” he said.

“The club has developed the juniors really well and the list is now young, talented and really close to more success.

“This is a good opportunity for me to stay local and work towards the ultimate success and it’s really exciting.”
