RISING golf star Luke Noble thanks his dad Sam for his start in the game.
Just don’t expect to see the Woodcroft father-son team on the course any time soon.
“My dad bought me my first golf set for my 10th birthday and without that I wouldn’t be where I am now,” Noble, 17, says.
“But he can’t stand caddying for me out on the course.
“Dad likes to play a safe game and I like to attack the flag, so he’ll tell me to do one thing and I’ll do the other.”
Noble will cap a memorable year when he travels to Toowoomba, Queensland, this week for his first School Sport Australia national championships.
It comes a month after the Year 11 student led Reynella East College to its maiden state school knockout title.
“I’ve been dreaming of doing this (representing SA) ever since I first picked up a club,” Noble says.
“I just want to win a couple of matches up there and get my name out there.
“Over the last year, I’ve started to become a lot more confident with my game and started to realise you aren’t going to make it without practice.”
Noble has played his entire career at the Vines Golf Club, about 500m from his front door.
He says his coach Steve Krause has helped him overcome the psychological challenges of the sport.
“Golf is a mental game.
“If you have an awesome swing but can’t stand missing a putt then you’ve got no chance.”
“Golf messes with your head so much but that just makes you love it more.”
