Vale Park cyclist Rohan Dennis continues run of seconds with silver in Commonwealth Games time trial

BRENTON Dennis is proud of his son Rohan’s Commonwealth Games silver medal, but thinks the cyclist’s bridesmaid’s dress is “due for a dry clean”.

BRENTON Dennis says he is incredibly proud of his son Rohan’s performance in the 40km time trial at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

But he thinks the 24 year old’s bridesmaid’s dress is “due for a bloody dry clean”.

Rohan, of Vale Park, won a silver medal in last night’s race, adding to second-placed finishes in time trials at the Tour of California, Tour de Romandie, Criterium International and Circuit Cycliste Sarthe this year.

He also claimed a silver in the team pursuit at the 2012 London Olympics.

“It’s absolutely fantastic to get a medal,” Mr Dennis says.

“But this is his fifth second for the year ... and he was hoping to take the bridesmaid’s dress off.

“There was a better rider on the day and that’s just the way it goes.”

Mr Dennis says he and wife Debbie were on the edge of their seats at home while watching the race.

The telecast switching between the cycling and hockey several times increased their anxiety.

Rohan led at the 26km checkpoint, only for England’s Alex Dowsett to pip him by nine seconds.

“I’ve been nervous for days,” Mr Dennis says.

“We knew it was going to be close.

“At the third checkpoint Rohan hit first place but then they’d flick back to the hockey and you’d think ‘oh my God, please just stay on it’.

“But we’re extremely proud of him and we’re regretful we couldn’t be there.

“Work just stopped us from getting there.”
