Unley Mercedes meets Modbury in tomorrow’s division three amateur football grand final

UNLEY Mercedes’ Nick Wark says he is not thinking about supporters running onto the oval if he kicks his 100th goal of the season in tomorrow’s grand final.

UNLEY Mercedes forward Nick Wark insists he is not thinking about the prospect of supporters running onto the oval after he kicks a goal tomorrow.

Wark, 24, will enter the Jets’ division three grand final against Modbury on 99 majors for the season.

The former Sturt player says he is more interested in winning a premiership than hitting the impending 100-goal milestone.

“People keep mentioning it but I’m trying not to pay much attention to it,” Wark says.

“I’m just excited to be in a grand final.

“I couldn’t really care if I kick a goal or not as long as we win.”

Wark, of Eden Hills, has kicked bags of 13, 12 and 10 this season – his second at the Jets.

He booted seven goals in the semi-final against Modbury but missed a few opportunities to crack the ton late in the game.

“I was pretty stuffed by then,” he says.

Wark, who stands at 188cm, played mostly as a defender in 75 league games for Sturt from 2006-10, including the 2009 grand final.

He says he left the Double Blues after struggling to juggle construction management studies, a casual job and league football.

From there Wark joined Tailem Bend before following workmates to Unley Mercedes, where he plays alongside another former Double Blue, 2002 premiership player Stephen White.

“I played (forward) as a junior but when I started playing league footy we were a bit weak down back and I got thrown there,” he says.

“Whitey helps because he probably gets the best defender every week.

“If we can win a flag this year, I’d be extremely proud.”
