TRINITY Old Scholars coach Stephen Couzner says the club’s first A-grade flag is dedicated to its “heart and soul,” Carl Teusner.

The Lions, who entered the Adelaide Footy League in 2006, beat Rosewater 13.4 (82) to 9.7 (61) in the division six grand final at Thebarton Oval on Saturday to snare a breakthrough premiership.

But they prevailed without full-back and former club president Teusner, who did not play after Salisbury West captain Adam Jones broke his jaw during the qualifying final last month.

Couzner handed an emotional Teusner a premiership medal after Saturday’s match.

“He didn’t play, but we played because of him,” Couzner said. “He’s the reason why we exist, he’s the reason why the club has that relationship that exists with the school, he’s just the heart and soul.

“Although he wasn’t part of it today, he’s been part of it for 10 years. If you can say a footy club has a heart, it would be him.”

Trinity Old Scholars was hungrier and attacked the ball hard from the first bounce.

Couzner said he could not be prouder of his players.

“It’s just pride,” Couzner said.

“These boys were at the lowest of lows a few weeks ago, involved in an incident that we didn’t want to be.

“It’s history now, first one (flag) at A-grade level, so in 100 years time, people are going to be talking about this one.”

Teusner’s teammate Jack Millar capped a solid performance when he was named best on ground, as voted on by the umpires.

Millar says being part of the club’s first A grade premiership is an unreal feeling and a memory he will cherish forever.

“It’s pretty overwhelming,” Millar, 22, said

“I guess we went in as the underdogs and we came out with the win.

“The thing I love about our side is that we don’t really have any real standouts, we have a lot of contributors who put their hands up and play well.

“It’s just unreal and huge for the club.”

Millar also paid tribute to Teusner.

“Carl is one of those players who bleeds TOS, he’s all about the club,” Millar said.

“He’s been around for years and he’s one of those blokes you would’ve loved to have running around out there.”
