Here is what caught our eye at the weekend:
SUMMER IS COMING BUT WINTER IS HOT
Back-to-back Grade Cricket matches on the weekend gave batsmen a double dip at making a big score and Glenelg’s Jake Winter cashed in big time.
The Seahorses opener made a stunning 176 off 135 balls on Sunday – the biggest individual one-day score in the competition for at least 10 years.
Winter’s total just eclipses that of Sturt’s Brad Davis, who hit 175 in a 50-over match last season.
No batsman has hit a higher one-day total than Winter since the 2008/9 season, according to MyCricket statistics.
The Redbacks rookie smashed Adelaide’s bowlers from pillar to post at Glenelg Oval with 18 fours and three sixes at he went at almost eight runs an over.
Glenelg went on to post 6/363 before holding the Buffalos to 9/219 to take the win.
It came after a win for the Seahorses on Saturday against East Torrens, where Winter was trapped LBW on 34. We bet he is thankful for a second dig on Sunday.
Winter was not the only star in Grade Cricket however, with Adelaide University’s Ben Wakim hitting back-to-back centuries.
The Blacks’ captain scored an unbeaten 114 from 96 balls in the first match against Tea Tree Gully and then blasted 161 from 133 balls against Northern Districts on Sunday.
It moved Wakim to the top of the Grade Cricket runs leaderboard with 400 in total, 17 ahead of West Torrens’ Kelvin Smith and Kensington’s Jake Brown. Bravo Ben.
SOMETHING IN THE WATER UP NORTH
Last week the story of Trinity Old Scholars veteran Rob McLean making his first century at age 41 was the talk of local cricket but now a pair of Nurioopta batsmen have caught the same drought-breaking disease.
Ben Giles and Damien Aird made 130 and 125 respectively on Saturday – maiden centuries for them both.
The timely tons came at 41 and 45 years of age for the pair in Barossa and Light Cricket Association’s A3 competition.
Giles and Aird combined for 229 for the third wicket as Nurioopta finished the day on 6/364 at Stockwell Oval and well and truly in command in the two-day match against Light Pass.
Cricket: the game that keeps on giving no matter what age you are.

NINE OF THE BEST
None of you bowlers are going to top this.
In Para Districts Grade Three, One Tree Hill’s Lee Jacobs managed a very rare “nine-for” in an outright win against Dublin.
After an average return of 1/45 in Dublin’s first innings 123, he took 9/49 from 19 overs to slay the opposition for 143, setting up an easy nine-wicket outright.
Wow.
MATURE YOUTH
It was a runfest in ASCA Section One as Western Youth piled up 6/448 against Plympton Footballers.
Leading the way was Matthew D’Angelo with 174 not out.
He featured in partnerships of 167 with Brad Johansen (93) and 104 with Jacob Shepherd (82).
It is worth noting the game is at Western Youth’s ground, which is about the size of my lounge room.
JUST 144 FOR MATTHEW
It was a poor day for another fellow in fine form, Panorama’s Matthew McCleary.
Despite helping his side to an easy win over Goodwood in Turf’s LO3 competition, he slashed his average by more than 50 – from 249 to 196.
His 144 from 98 balls (12 fours, eight sixes) comes on the back of 138 and 111 not out so far this season.
He totally dominated his team’s 231 and was ninth out after opening the batting.
DECLARATION FAILS
In Adelaide & Suburban’s Section Nine, Sheidow Park was flying at 0/167 after 33 overs with Kane Trigg on 102 and Anthony Patterson on 54.
But instead of kicking on, Sheidow declared.
Perhaps thinking South Road’s past three scores of 30, 118 and 42 meant easy pickings, they must have figured the remaining 25 overs would allow them to knock over the Roadies at least once.
Well, the Roadies not only negotiated the rest of the day one down, they managed to peel off 66 as well.
South Road has vastly improved since making news in January when it was bowled out for just two runs.
It will be a nervous week for Sheidow.
MARION’S DAY OUT
It was something of a slaughter in Turf B2, as Marion rolled Pembroke for 56, then piled on the agony with 2/325.
Leading the way were Kyle Tapscott (116 not out) and Joe George (101 not out), who produced an unbeaten stand of 223 for the third wicket.
Jesse Ortega then finished the job with 6/20 from 12 overs (after 3/14 in the first innings) to take down Pembroke for 123 and outright points.
O’KEEFE THE MAN TO CHASE
After belting an unbeaten double hundred last week, Coromandel Ramblers’ Andrew O’Keefe was it again, making 114 – again not out – from 171 balls, totally carrying his team to 8/194.
With a round one 53, that makes 381 already for once out.
