The Kangaroo Island Football League’s top 30 players ranked

The Kangaroo Island Football League is full of talented SA country footballers so we’ve ranked the competition’s top 30 players of 2024. See who made the cut.

Kangaroo Island has played host to some of SA’s most talented country footballers and season 2024 has been no exception.

Based on this season’s form, we’ve ranked the Kangaroo Island Football League’s top 30 players of 2024.

Top three sides Western Districts, Wisanger and Kingscote led the way for representation with 24 players combined.

Here are our rankings from no. 30 to 1.

30. DECLAN HARDY-CORBY

(Kingscote)

Hardy-Corby has been highly effective in recent seasons for Kingscote and has started 2024 well.

Has great awareness on the ball and in front of goal with the ability to finish or set-up teammates with ease.

Hardy-Corby has three goals and two best player performances in seven games.

29. ANTHONY ANDERSON

(Kingscote)

Kingscote’s leading goalkicker in 2023, Anderson has continued to impress for the Hounds in a more versatile role.

A strong target inside 50 who is one of the hardest workers for his side, Anderson is a highly-skilled players who can damage opposition around the ground.

Has two best player nods and three goals in five games.

28. JASON FRYAR

A reliable player in the contest and behind the ball for Wisanger, Fryar has been a standout in 2024 after a strong 2023 season.

The Panthers veteran brings elite leadership and a strong presence on the ball, laying multiple tackles a game and hitting teammates with consistent disposal.

Has two best player nods and two goals in six games so far this year.

27. SAM CLIFFORD

(Wisanger)

An influential player forward of the footy for Wisanger, Clifford has starred for the Panthers so far this season.

An impressive forward who can be effective one-out or at ground level, Clifford can also move into the contest or behind the ball if needed.

Has 18 goals and three best player appearances in his eight games so far.

26. TOM SCHMIDT

(Western Districts)

Signing with Western Districts for season 2024 after time with Bute, Schmidt has been a solid player for his new side.

A tough and skilled player who hits the contest hard and applies great tackle pressure.

Has two best player mentions and seven goals in five games.

25. TYSON HOLMAN

(Kingscote)

One of Kingscote’s standouts in the contest, Holman has been important for the Hounds this year.

A hard worker who finds plenty of the ball and always makes good decisions in possession.

Has three best player mentions and six goals in six games.

24. TIM LARCOMBE

(Western Districts)

A midfield/defence utility for Western Districts, Larcombe has been a standout player in the KIFL yet again this season.

Larcombe is a tireless worker in congestion, winning the contested ball for his side, and also provides security at the back by spoiling aerial contests.

Has two best player nods and three goals in his six games.

23. TOBY WHEATON

(Dudley United)

Wheaton had a solid season for the Eagles in 2023 but has been much-improved in season 2024.

Does great work behind the ball and can also produce through the middle or on the flanks as a high accumulator who provides run and carry and delivers well.

Has four best player mentions and two goals in eight games.

22. JESSE RULE

(Wisanger)

The former Cummins Rambler star has been a standout for the Panthers since joining for season 2024.

Rule is a versatile player who has played up front across half-forward, can drop back or do damage in the middle with his reliable hand and foot skills.

Has three best player nods and a goal in six games.

21. TRAD MCMULKIN

(Parndana)

A regular part of the KIFL’s interleague side, McMulkin is having another strong season for Parndana.

A dominant midfielder who hits the contest hard and can damage sides with distribution off of either foot.

Has three best player mentions in his five games and has kicked one goal so far.

20. JORDAN WHITTLE

(Western Districts)

A versatile player who can perform on the ball as well as up front while also possessing the ability to move back if needed, Whittle has been an emerging young star for Western Districts.

Whittle covers ground well, distributes the ball efficiently and can also hit the scoreboard at an efficient rate.

Has three best player nods and nine goals in seven games in the KIFL and has also played for the South Adelaide U18s this year.

19. NICK SHURVEN

(Wisanger)

A versatile player who does great work in the contest and also has an impact up front.

Shurven’s ability to collect cleanly in the air or at ground level puts him in great position to do damage through the middle or in front of goal.

Has 15 goals and four best player nods in eight games.

18. TAIT FLORANCE

(Dudley United)

One of the most promising young players in the KIFL, Florance has been a standout for the Eagles this season.

A tireless player with great skills who covers ground as well as anyone in the competition and racks up touches for fun.

Has two goals and five best player mentions in eight games.

17. LUKE SHURVEN

(Wisanger)

A rising young gun for Wisanger, Shurven has had a strong season so far for the Panthers.

Shurven is a strong player who can produce great performances in the contest or up front with his ability to hit the scoreboard.

Has 13 goals and five best player nods in eight games.

16. ZACH TRETHEWEY

(Parndana)

A superstar for Parndana through a number of years, Tretheway has still been one of the standouts on the ball in the KIFL despite Parndana’s struggles.

A ball magnet who can dominate in the contest by winning his own footy and distributing to teammates with high efficiency, Tretheway has been one of his side’s best through all of his appearances this year.

Six best player nods in seven games this season.

15. JOSH GRAHAM

(Western Districts)

A star onballer who has been a consistent contributor for Western Districts this year, Graham remains one of the top players in the KIFL.

A workhorse who can win his own footy or hit the scoreboard, Graham has a high footy IQ and possesses top drawer skills.

Has three best player nods and three goals in his five games so far.

14. RORY LOVERING

A valuable onballer for Kingscote, Lovering’s effort through the middle has been a standout for his side in 2024.

A consistent player who finds the footy with ease and delivers efficiently, Lovering remains one of his team’s most important stars.

Has three best player nods and a goal in four games.

13. BROK VINEY-OBST

(Wisanger)

Viney-Obst has been a damaging ruck for Wisanger and remains one of the club’s most important players.

A big presence in the contest who always deals to midfielders efficiently, Viney-Obst can also play as a key target up front with his ability to take big marks and finish in front of goal.

Has four best player nods and 16 goals in eight games.

12. BRADLEY CRABB

A dominant key position player who can lock down almost any forward or move up front to bag goals for Western Districts.

The former South Adelaide gun has starred for the Saints in a number of roles this year and is one of the most skilled players in the competition.

Has 17 goals and three best player nods in six games.

11. SAM WILLSON

(Dudley United)

Brother of South East star Matt Willson, Sam left Naracoorte for Dudley this year and has been a star forward for the Eagles.

A skilled and strong player up front who makes smart leads, takes impressive marks and boots goals from anywhere.

Has three best player mentions and 18 goals in just four games and would be ranked higher with more appearances.

10. DARCY KILDEA

(Wisanger)

Signing with Wisanger for the 2024 season, the former star South Augusta captain has been an important player for his new side.

A workhorse through the middle who wins plenty of the footy and can deliver to teammates efficiently under pressure.

Kildea has four best player appearances and three goals in his eight games.

9. DYLAN LOCKETT

(Western Districts)

A star midfielder who can also do damage up front for Western Districts, Lockett has been a KIFL standout again in 2024.

Lockett is always providing an option on the ball or in the forward 50, taking strong marks and often making the best decisions with ball in hand.

Has five best player nods and six goals in his seven games so far this year.

8. LACHIE INGERSON

(Kingscote)

Ingerson has emerged as one of Kingscote’s standout stars this season, producing some of his best performances against the top KIFL sides.

An athletic player who can do damage around the ground, Ingerson is clean by hand and foot and can also hit the scoreboard with ease when needed.

Has 21 goals and five best player nods in eight games.

7. KHYAL STEAD

(Wisanger)

Wisanger’s star playing-coach, Stead remains an impactful forward and strong leader for his club in 2024.

A smart and strong player up front who makes clever leads and also takes big grabs, Stead is a reliable kick for goal who can also pinch-hit in the contest.

Has 30 majors through his eight games so far this year.

6. PAUL GREEN

(Kingscote)

A star veteran for the Hounds, Green’s presence in the contest has been integral to his club’s success.

The Kingscote captain leads by example on the field, attacking contests courageously to win the footy for his side and setting up teammates with accurate disposal.

Has five best player nods in eight games so far.

5. KEENAN JACOBS

(Dudley United)

Arriving from Naracoorte, Jacobs has been a superstar for Dudley in season 2024.

Jacobs loves to get his hands dirty in the contest and win important possessions for his team while also performing as one of Dudley’s top distributors.

Has seven best player nods and a goal in seven games.

4. TOM JONAS

(Western Districts)

The former Port Adelaide star and AFL captain made a shock move to Western Districts alongside his brother Sam this year and has been dominant in the few games he has played.

A strong and athletic defender who can also do damage in a number of other roles around the ground, Jonas boasts brilliant skills and a powerful marking ability.

Produced a dominant display against Kingscote in which he booted five goals up front to add to his tally of eight majors and two best player nods in three games.

Would likely be ranked at number one if he had more appearances under his belt.

3. LLEYTON HEDGES

Currently the leading goalkicker in the KIFL, Hedges has picked up from where he left off last year to put together a fantastic 2024 so far.

Hedges booted 72 goals through 14 games last year and has 42 in six games so far this year, often providing a strong target up front with safe hands and a reliable kick.

A big game player for Western Districts, Hedges has three best player performances this year and often boots big bags during finals.

2. LIAM SAMPSON

(Wisanger)

The 2022 Mail Medallist, Sampson has been dominant yet again for Wisanger after a strong 2023 campaign.

The Panthers gun is a skilled onballer who can do it all from winning his own footy and dealing to teammates with precision to taking big grabs or setting his teammates up in front of goal.

Has eight best player nods and three goals through eight games.

1. SAM JONAS

The former Sturt, Rostrevor OC and Ceduna gun joined Western Districts alongside brother Tom Jonas for this season and has dominated around the ground for his new club.

A strong and versatile player who can do damage on, behind or ahead of the ball, Jonas wins plenty of his own footy, is reliable in the air and efficient by hand or foot.

Has six best player nods and six goals through six appearances so far.
