St Peter’s Old Collegians and Goodwood Saints have been rewarded for stellar division one Adelaide Footy League campaigns with four players each included in the 2020 team of the year.
SPOC, who finished as minor premier, and PAOC had the most number of players included in a side filled with matchwinners, big-game performers and plenty of experience.
St Peter’s Old Collegians coach Geoff Riddle was also recognised for leading his side to a 7-2 record, the minor premiership and a preliminary final appearance this Saturday.
The 2020 line-up of the top flight’s best was revealed at the competition’s awards ceremony on Monday night.
It was selected with input from division one coaches, among others.
Ex-Brisbane AFL midfielder Jesse O’Brien has starred for SPOC this year and was named as the side’s captain as well as on-ball as a follower.
He was joined in the Team of the Year by teammates Jock McLeay (right forward pocket) and James Hargreaves (half-back flank).
SPOC’s John Vrodos was named on the bench.
Goodwood Saints, who have earned a grand final berth, also dominated the team.
Tom Carter was picked in the ruck, Nick Favretto and Jacob Hughes made up the full-forward line, while Tom Edwards was named on the bench.
Prince Alfred Old Collegians star Jake Pitt earned selection for the second year in a row up forward, while teammates Hayden Jolly (half-back) and Will Dalwood (centre half-back) also received a nod.
Adelaide University’s Ben Edwards, who finished as the league’s leading goal kicker with 34 majors from nine minor rounds, deservedly won a spot as the full forward.
Blacks teammate Ben Adams was named as the rover.
Brighton’s Nigel Osborn, who claimed the top tier best and fairest medal on Monday night, was named on-ball, while fellow Bomber Jacob Carger was named on the left forward-flank.
Despite finishing outside the top five, two players from last year’s premier Payneham Norwood Union made the cut with Anthony Giannini (wing) and Tyler Brimacombe (full-back).
Rostrevor Old Collegians, who will take on SPOC in this weekend’s preliminary final, had two players selected.
Ever-reliable Sam Jonas was picked in the back pocket with teammate Tim Baccanello on the interchange.
Port District’s Jack Gaffney (wing) and Luke McInerney (bench) together with Unley Jets’ Jack Lewis (back pocket) round out the team.
