A former Richmond and Sydney talent and an ex-Melbourne high-flyer are the latest high-profile signings at Adelaide Footy League clubs.

Nathan Gordon, who played 23 AFL games at the Tigers and Swans, has signed for division two outfit Broadview while former Demons forward Michael Newton is set to join reigning top flight premiers Payneham Norwood Union.

But Newton – winner of the 2007 AFL mark of the year – could be hamstrung by border restrictions.

The 33-year-old lives in Victoria on the family dairy farm but the Ovens and Murray Football League, where he has played with Wangaratta since 2016, was one of more than 30 football leagues in the state to cancel its season.

PNU playing coach Jace Bode said he was keen to link up with his former Melbourne and Norwood teammate following the shutdown.

“He’s is one of my oldest mates and we’ve always said one day he would come over and play a game with me or I would go and play with him,” Bode said.

“Wangaratta’s season got canned last week and we’ve put in a COVID permit clearance for him, which gets him over to play and then as of November 1 he’s back at Wangaratta.

“There’s still a lot of water that has to go under the bridge, but he’s keen to come and play and we’re rapt to have him given his quality and relationship with a lot of the guys out here.”

Bode hoped Newton would be able to play enough games to qualify for finals, once border restrictions between SA and Victoria were eased.

The Falcons will also have the services of former North Adelaide small forward Strato Agorastos, who has returned to the club.

Meanwhile, Gordon is set to be one of the stars of division two as Broadview aims to return to the finals.

The 30-year-old was on Sydney’s list from in 2011 and 2012 before he was delisted.

He then signed for North Adelaide and put together an impressive 2013 season which led to him being drafted to Richmond, where he would stay for two seasons.

Gordon has spent the past two years playing in country Victoria.

Broadview has also recruited Corey Davey (Solomontown), who won the Dean Bailey Award for best Crows SANFL-listed player in 2018, Frazer Driscoll (North Adelaide), Tom Rogers (Kingston) and Matthew Taylor (York Peninsula FL).

Tigers coach Nathan Grainger said Gordon would be a weapon in the midfield and up forward.

“He’s going to play a big role, helping me as well with his experience,” Grainger said.

“We had commitments from a few of them (the recruits) for next year and COVID just brought it forward.”
