STURT Basketball Club is packing away its traditional blue jerseys for one night for a good cause.
The Sabres’ two Premier League teams will wear pink uniforms in their games against Norwood at Pasadena on Saturday to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer.
Going pink takes on extra meaning for Sturt’s Soriah Moon and Tom Goodall.
Moon’s mother, Hermina, has been battling breast cancer for two years, while both of Goodall’s grandmothers had the disease.
“We can see Mum slowly deteriorating but her spirits are quite high,” Moon, 24, says.
“My teammates all know what’s going on and always ask how she’s going and how I’m going.
“I think what the club is doing is great.
“I’m pretty excited about the game.”
Moon started in Sturt’s under-23 division two team five years ago before working her way up the ranks.
She is now a member of the Sabres’ 10-2 Premier League outfit, which is sitting second on the ladder.
“Basketball is very therapeutic for me. It’s a way to forget what’s going on,”
“Mum tries to come to all my games.”
Sturt major sponsor Blackchrome Sportswear has provided the club with the uniforms, which will be auctioned off after the game.
All funds raised will go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
“Going pink and supporting organisations in the community is a really positive thing for us because it shows we’re not just a sporting club,” Moon says.
Sturt’s men go into the game in seventh spot with a 4-8 record.
