Wilson Lee had just helped Sturt break a 28-year division one baseball championship drought three days after claiming the competition’s best and fairest award – and there was only one thing on his mind.
“I was just seeing how quickly I could celebrate the win with everyone at the club,” Lee, 27, says.
“It was a pretty nervous ninth inning in that second game but once that happened I think I kind of went blank for a little bit and then started celebrating.
“It was an emotional time.
“The culture of the team is great and I’ve loved it this year.”
The pitcher/outfielder claimed the Capps Medal – SA Baseball League’s division one best and fairest medal – as voted on by the umpires last Wednesday night.
He topped the leaderboard with 39 votes.
Sturt’s three-game grand final series against Goodwood began on the Friday night and ended on Saturday after the Saints won the opening two matches, 10-3 and 5-3.
The Capps Medal and title wins are validation for Lee following his move from Woodville to Sturt at the end of last season after nine campaigns with the Senators.
Lee, of Adelaide, says Sturt’s depth allowed him to have more fun this year as he was not relied upon as the number one pitcher.
“It still hasn’t really hit me yet that we won the championship and also that I won the Capps,” he says.
“We were a little nervous ahead of game one – Goodwood is a really good team.
“But after winning game one, I had a feeling in game two that we would win it.
“I’ve been able to rest a little bit with my arm, we have enough guys in the team to pitch so I didn’t have to be the one guy to pitch so I just had fun.
“I moved because I was looking to chase a championship, and that’s exactly what I did.”
Wilson is set play for the Bonn Capitals Baseball Club in Germany’s Bundesliga – the country’s highest league – before returning to Sturt next summer.
