South Australia’s most prestigious foot-racing event is changing its format for the first time in its 136th-year history.
The Bay Sheffield will return to its traditional home in Colley Reserve in December but will also host several other races at ACH Group Stadium (Glenelg Oval).
This will expand the event to a three-day carnival for the first time.
The decision was made by the South Australian Athletic League managing committee on Sunday.
The Bay Sheffield was held at the oval through 2020 and 2021 after Colley Reserve was deemed unsuitable because of Covid restrictions at the time.
SAAL president Colin Rowston said the changes would provide more opportunities.
“ACH Group Stadium has been a terrific venue for the Bay Sheffield Carnival throughout the pandemic, but Colley Reserve means so much to so many people,” Rowston said.
“Utilising both venues means we can make the best of both options and grow the event at the same time.
“We’re now focusing on securing sponsors and getting everything in place for an event which all South Australians can be proud of.”
ACH Group Stadium will host races on December 27 and 28, with Colley Reserve set to host the final day on December 29.
