A new division one Adelaide Footy League club could be set to compete for silverware this season after appointing a star playing-coach and recruiting a dual Magarey Medallist.

A newly-promoted division one Adelaide Footy League club has its sights set on success in 2023 after appointing a star playing-coach and recruiting a SANFL icon.

Former South Adelaide ruck Alex Cailotto, who starred as a player during Sacred Heart Old Collegians’ grand final run in division two last season, will be playing-coach of the side this season following Steve Kay’s resignation after four years at the helm.

Cailotto has been joined by former Panthers midfielder and dual Magarey Medallist Joel Cross ahead of the 2023 season.

“He’s been great at the club so far. Obviously he’s a great mate of mine, he’s a quality bloke firstly and then he’s obviously an exceptional player,” Cailotto said of Cross’ arrival.

“We’re a young team but we’re going to benefit a lot not only from his skill and presence on the ground but also from what he can do with the leadership side of things and the coaching aspect off the field – he’s definitely going to be someone I can bounce ideas off of.”

Hearts put together a strong 2022 season after missing out on promotion in 2021, fuelled by Cailotto, half-back Seb Kerrish and key forward Tristan Carcuro.

While the club lost to Broadview by two goals in the big dance, it has been as enthusiastic as ever during pre-season.

“We’ve had really good numbers out on the track since about November and everyone is looking forward to the season in division one, it’s going to be a really good challenge,” Cailotto said.

“We’ve expanded a little bit on last year’s game plan and we’re focusing on our core fundamentals – when we get that right we’re very good, but if we get them wrong anyone can make us pay in the top division.

“We’re excited for the season ahead, we’re well aware it goes up a notch in division one and that we’re going to have to be on our toes.”

Cailotto added that while the group was in strong shape, it would be naive to place any major expectations on his team.

“I think everyone thinks they can compete at this time of year but our focus is just continuing to improve each week and putting together a sustained effort throughout the season.

“If we can do that we’ll be in a good spot later in the year.”
