It is being billed as the biggest match of the 2020 college footy season so far with undefeated Sacred Heart taking on reigning Shield winners Prince Alfred this weekend.

Princes had the bye on Saturday, while Hearts enjoyed a big win over local rivals Immanuel under lights at Glenelg Oval.

Here are The Messenger’s round three college football match wraps:

SACRED HEART 20.15 (135) IMMANUEL 8.3 (51)

Sacred Heart coach Jon Symonds says his players are ready for the challenge of taking on reigning Messenger Shield champions Prince Alfred at home this weekend.

Hearts finetuned for the big clash with an 84-point victory over local rival Immanuel at Glenelg Oval on Saturday.

Symonds said the way his side had played and won the past three games would hold it in good stead for the match against PAC.

“I think we’ve had as good as preparation as we could hope to have going into this game (against PAC),” Symonds said.

“With the three games we’ve had so far, we’ve been able to do a lot of things we’d like to execute.

“We were a bit slow to get going each quarter and to Immanuel’s credit, they had the early momentum every quarter.

“But was pleased me was that defensively we were able to stand up to that and eventually work our way back into the contest, increase our pressure around the footy and get the game on our terms.

“I think the way we were able to stand firm and get the momentum going our way the longer the quarter went on was the most pleasing thing.”

Lewis Rayson, Kobe Ryan, Ed Faulkner (four goals) and Tyson Coe were best on ground for Sacred Heart against Immanuel.

Symonds expected the battle against Princes to be fierce but said his players were keen for the game.

“We haven’t played them since early last year and we were able to sneak over the line after the siren,” Symonds said.

“We also haven’t had them at home for a while, so we are very much looking forward to it.”

James Reuther was best up forward for Immanuel, booting three goals, while Callum Saunders and Hugh Stagg battled hard.

PEMBROKE 13.9 (87) ST MICHAEL’S (75)

Pembroke notched its first win of the 2020 college football season when it beat St Michael’s away on Saturday.

The hosts were full of confidence after tasting victory for the first time last week but the visitors just got over the line by two straight kicks

Ethan Schwerdt, Archie Richardson, Archer Bawden, Will Hammond, Ned Carruthers, Harry Peniment and Jack Willis led a long list of contributors for Pembroke.

Hammond and Callum Green were unstoppable inside 50 for Pembroke, booting three goals apiece.

Bawden, Schwerdt, Richardson, Seb Wauer, Ollie Duffy, Dylan Hokins and Charlie Bowen all kicked a goal each.

Pembroke football director Michael Bawden was proud of the side for holding on after St Michael’s got within a goal during the final term.

Bawden said the players did well to bounce back after the loss to PAC the weke prior.

“It was a really good game by both teams, both were really focused on the footy,” Bawden said.

“Our midfield of Schwerdt, Bawden and Richardson certainly controlled the game.

“Will Hammond was a strong target up forward and Harry Peniment and Ned Carruthers were great rebounding off our half back line.

“We were in front by five goals at one stage then St Michael’s gave us a real challenge.

“But we were able to move the ball cleanly through our midfield and Will Hammond took a mark and kicked his third goal to sela the game for us.”

Tom Sheldon, Zak Rose, Charlie Blair, Oscar McCann, Peter Dichiera and Adam D’Aloia played well for St Michael’s.

Blair was the hosts’ top goal kicker, finishing the match with five, while D’Aloia booted two.

ROSTREVOR 11.3 (69) WESTMINSTER 11.7 (73)

Westminster prevailed over Rostrevor away on Saturday in a thrilling game.

Both sides entered the clash winless after two rounds this college football season but it was Westminster that managed to notch its first win, triumphing over Rostrevor by four points.

Jaden Grosser and Lukas Cooke led the way up forward for the visitors, kicking three goals each, while Jack Francis finished with two.

Dual football and cricket star Sam Rahaley was best on ground for Rostrevor with five goals.

Zak Lovegrove kicked three majors, while Harry Pedler finished with two and Beau Baldwin booted one.

Jack Hodges and Harry Wright also played well for the hosts.

ST PETER’S 17.20 (122) SCOTCH 2.6 (18)

St Peter’s remains undefeated after three rounds — its latest victory came against Scotch away on Saturday.

The visitors proved way too strong, beating the hosts by 106 points.

St Peter’s skipper James Higgins (three goals) led the way again, while Felix Packer booted five majors.

Matthew Roberts and Lachlan De Cesare were also prolific for St Peter’s.

St Peter’s coach Sam Elliot said his side started slow for the third week in a row but the players were able to wrestle back the momentum and win the game.

We started really slowly (and that’s) something we really need to improve on,’ Elliot said.

“When our intensity and effort increased we took control of the game.

“Again our leaders were dominant, I’m really pleased with their leadership and ability to teach our younger boys.

“It’s also really encouraging to be playing seven year 10 boys (and) the upside is exciting.”

Hugo Walter, Jordy Cock, Archie Morgan, Angus Pederick and Ben Legoe worked hard for the hosts.

Lachie Hurt and Oscar Turnbull were Scotch’s goal kickers.
