The penalties for two local soccer clubs involved in an on-field brawl which left a player with “sickening injuries” can now be revealed.
Police were called to the February 21 pre-season match between Adelaide Croatia Vukovi and Ghan Kilburn City after reports of a large fight.
Following the incident, in a statement on their Facebook page Adelaide Croatia said one of the club’s players was “viciously assaulted” and sustained a “sickening head injury”.
It was later revealed a spectator known to Adelaide Croatia had allegedly been captured on camera ‘king hitting’ a Ghan player during the incident.
On Wednesday, the Messenger revealed Adelaide Croatia had been fined $450 and would receive a three point deduction ahead of the 2021 season.
On Friday, in a statement on its website the South Australian Amateur Soccer League confirmed it had conducted investigations into the incident and both penalties for both clubs could be revealed.
The statement said Ghan Kilburn – who were already subject to two existing suspended sanctions – would not participate in the 2021 Cichanowski Shield, SAASL Challenge Cup or Reserve Cup Competitions.
“(Ghan) will be fined in total $1,350 and will commence Season 2021 with negative 18 championship points,” it said.
“The investigations committee has referred three Ghan Kilburn City players to appear before the disciplinary committee.”
The club will also be suspended immediately if any further incidents occur between now and the end of the 2022 season.
In a statement on their website, Football South Australia said it would now review the league’s findings.
“As Ghan Kilburn City FC have nominated to participate in the State’s highest level Cup Competition, the FFA Cup Preliminary Rounds South Australia, Football SA is currently reviewing the findings made by SAASL to determine whether to extend the exclusion from cup competitions to include the FFA Cup,” it said.
“Football SA will make a further statement when a determination has been made.”
Adelaide Croatia – who was subject to one existing suspended sanction – will be placed on a further suspended bond of $300 and a three point deduction until the end of 2022.
One Adelaide Croatia player will also appear before the disciplinary committee.
In its statement, the league said it had acted swiftly and was determined to “stamp out this type of behaviour”.
“The league … will rigorously investigate in a timely manner all allegations of inappropriate behaviours,” it said.
“It will not hesitate to apply sanctions.
“It will not tolerate any reoccurrence of such incidents in the future.
“This is an amateur, community competition that relies on volunteers and goodwill all round.”
