Record 15 Camden Athletics Club members to compete in Stawell Gift Athletic Carnival this Easter

CAMDEN Athletics Club hopes to extend a dominant season when a record 15 athletes head to the prestigious Stawell Gift Athletic Carnival this Easter.

CAMDEN Athletic Club hopes to continue a dominant season when a record 15 athletes head to the prestigious Stawell Gift Athletic Carnival this Easter.

Camden won a staggering 29 sashes during the SA Athletic League campaign and has several athletes travelling to the famed country Victorian athletic meeting at Stawell in good form.

“We’ve got some guys going really well,’’ legendary Camden trainer Frank McHugh said.

“But the thing with Stawell is that you can’t predict what’s going to happen.

“It’s a very competitive meet and you could go there and get run out in your heat.”

Former Camden Classic winner Brad Schutz is likely to concentrate on the 70m and McHugh says the athlete is managing a niggle but in good form.

Hettie Driscoll is a dark horse in the women’s 120m Gift, if she can survive Stawell’s notoriously tricky heats.

She may also contest the women’s 400m.

Youngsters Jack Sutton (400m), Hayden Rothe (400m) and Brad Kitto (800m and 1600m) also head to the carnival in good form.

“It will be a great experience for the younger ones,’’ McHugh said.

“It’s a terrific carnival.”

Other South Aussies heading to Stawell include Alicia Wrench-Doody, Yasmin Openshaw, Ali Trewartha, Tjimarri Sanderson-Milera, Dylan Hicks and David Gross.

Australian women’s 100m record holder, Mel Breen, John Steffensen, Tamsyn Lewis and Craig Mottram are among a host of high profile athletes competing.
