Jack Douventzidis reckons luck helped him enter Pulteney Old Scholars’ record books.

The spin bowler snared an incredible 10/77 during day one of the Navy Blues’ B2 Adelaide Turf Cricket match against Unley at Kingswood Oval on Saturday.

That included taking Unley’s Fred Oliver for a duck and Chris Hogan for two.

The 10-wicket haul surpassed a previous club record of 9/12, which was made by Ian Jackman during the 1988/89 D grade season.

Douventzidis, who captains the team, was the first at Pulteney Old Scholars player to claim 10 wickets in the Navy Blues’ 82-year history.

“Our main fast bowler called us up at about 9 o’clock to say he had to work until tea,” Douventzidis said.

“Essentially, I only had three bowlers for a 36 degree day.

“Because I bowl spin, I brought myself on quite early and they (the wickets) just kept falling.

“But if it wasn’t for my good friend Aaron Beaty not playing the full game, it wouldn’t have happened.

“100 per cent, there was luck involved and I wasn’t even thinking about getting 10 until I was on nine and then thought, I could probably do this.”

Unley finished day one on 207 with play resuming this Saturday.

Douventzidis has been at the club since 2008, taken a total of 257 wickets and won a title with the club in 2009.

Before his record-breaking haul, the 30-year-old had taken six scalps.

He also topped the nation’s best bowling list over the weekend – coming in second was a cricketer from Victoria’s Emmanuel South Oakleigh Cricket Club, claiming 8/23.

Douventzidis, who works as a development manager at the SANFL, said it was an honour to be in the Navy Blues’ history books.

“Now I can put my hat to something at the club,” Douventzidis, of Prospect, said.

“I knew no one had ever taken 10 at the club but I didn’t know who I was passing or what the next best was.

“It’s nice to have something to hang your name to.

“The club is my family, I’m an old Pulteney boy myself, so the chance to go out and play more cricket with my mates and play with some really good players.”

Pulteney Old Scholars will be looking for a strong showing with the bat on day two this Saturday to help it to a third victory and lift it up from sixth place on the ladder.
