College footy was played in wet and windy conditions at the weekend but there were teams like Prince Alfred and Sacred Heart that thrived in the tough weather recorded big wins.

Here is our wrap of college footy’s round 10:

IMMANUEL 3.9 (27) PRINCE ALFRED 15.19 (109)

Prince Alfred held Immanuel to just three points for the second half in their Messenger Shield clash on their way to a 82-point victory away on Saturday.

The hosts challenged the Reds early in the first half but PAC broke away in the third quarter and was able to contend with the rain and wind better.

Louis Cowhan led the way for the Reds with six goals, while Kysaiah Pickett, Isaiah Dudley and Jamison Murphy were also solid.

PAC coach Marty McKinnon was pleased with his side’s effort and looked forward to a big couple of games which included a clash against Rostrevor this Saturday before the intercol against St Peter’s on August 24.

“It was not much of a day (weather wise) but I think the team coped well in the conditions.” McKinnon said.

“Immanuel, particularly in the first half, put up a really good contest around the ball and moved it with pace.

“They certainly asked some questions of us.

“But our second half was excellent we kicked 9.12 in the second half to their three points which was a really good response from half-time.

“We finished off really strongly and to maintain that level of intensity was pleasing.

“We had excellent ball movement and use despite the wind.”

Ruckman Chris Bawden, state representative Jordan Moore and Austin Forbes played well for the hosts.

Immanuel coach Troy Clements said his players battled hard but were simply no match for PAC.

“It’s always disappointing to lose,” Clements said.

“But our boys were fantastic.

“They were really committed to the contest, they played in the true Immanuel, honest, hardworking, competitive style and I was super proud of our boys.

SACRED HEART 11.10 (76) ROSTREVOR 3.8 (26)

Sacred Heart dominated its First XVIII match against traditional rival Rostrevor to reclaim the intercol trophy with a 50-point home win on Saturday.

In wet, windy and muddy conditions, Hearts led at every break on their way to a 11.10 (76) to 3.8 (26) triumph in front of hundreds of supporters of both teams.

Sacred Heart coach Jon Symonds was tremendously proud of his team for the way it not only attacked the contest but played with spirit befitting the occasion.

“Our effort to play to the conditions was exactly what we asked for and the discipline of the group to stay focused on the task at hand was as good as I’ve seen it,” Symonds said.

WESTMINSTER 4.5 (29) ST MICHAEL’S 7.12 (54)

St Michael’s secured its second victory of this Messenger Shield season when it beat Westminster by 30-points away on Saturday.

The Henley-based college proved too strong and prevailed 7.11 (53) to 3.10 (28), handing Westminster its seventh loss for its campaign.

St Michael’s coach Mark Mickan was proud of his side’s performance.

“It was pretty ordinary conditions, it was a bit windy and wet,” Mickan said.

“But it was a good game and both teams went at it pretty hard.

“We were fortunate to get the win in the end.

“It was one of those games where everyone played well, I thought.”

Westminster coach Ian Cox said Hamish McRae, Harvey Bock and Tom Tape battled well but his players struggled to contend with the wind in front of goal.

“It was a low scoring game,” Cox said.

“They kicked five goals to our zero at half-time.

“We struggled to get hold of the footy but played a much better last half.

“It’s a bit disappointing but that’s the way it goes.

“It was really windy and we kept on kicking to the wrong side (of the post) for the first half.

“It was a difficult game because of the wind blowing in one of the pockets and we didn’t take advantage of it in the first quarter and we paid the price.”

SCOTCH 3.5 (23) ST PETER’S 13.9 (87)

St Peter’s recorded a 64-point victory in its battle against Scotch away on Saturday.

But the win was soured by injuries to two key players ahead of Saints’ knockout match against Henley High last Tuesday (after presstime).

Jack Kelsh (back) and Lachy De Casare (concussion) were set to miss a few matches but St Peter’s coach Sam Elliot praised the way his side performed against Scotch.

“We moved the ball really well considering the conditions,” Elliot said.

“Scotch put a lot of numbers behind the ball to try and limit the damage, which is exactly what I would’ve done in the same situation.

“But our boys were pretty smart with the football and it was good to see a few of our young kids do really well.

“We took a lot of positives out of it but it was a bitter sweet day with the big injuries we copped.”

Year 10 ruckman Hugo Kittle, Scotch captain Angus Kitto, and Ned Walter played well for the hosts.

Coach Nathan Eagleton Nathan Eagleton said St Peter’s was just a class above.

“It was pretty tough condition and St Peter’s foot skills were probably better than ours,” Eagleton said.

“I thought we competed well for three quarters, it was probably just the second quarter that let us down.

“I think our competitiveness and our intensity around the ball has been really good, it’s just a bit of polish with our skills that we have to work on in the next couple of weeks.

“We want to at least finish the season on a high.”

ST IGNATIUS 9.6 (43) TRINITY 9.6 (60)

Trinity took advantage of an inaccurate St Ignatius side to triumph by 17 points away on Saturday.

The 9.6 (60) to 5.13 (43) victory was Trinity’s second victory in a row after beating Blackfriars last Tuesday.

Coach Scott Charlton said defender Ben Woods and on-baller Mani Liddy led the way for his side.

“It was pretty horrible conditions but we went out to try and bring energy and effort to the contest,” Charlton said.

“They (St Ignatius) were very good early and we were lucky they missed shots on goal.

“They had 18 scoring shots to our 15 and they were very good getting the ball inside their 50 but we were just accurate going forward and that’s what won us the game.

“Our midfield was very good and then our forward were able to finish off quite well.

“The boys, to their credit, kept pushing all day and St Ignatius kept throwing everything they had at us but we kept resisting and got the win.”
