Prince Alfred College’s sports teams wear pink socks for McGrath Foundation
PRINCE Alfred College is adding a splash of pink to its traditional maroon sports kit this weekend all in the name of breast cancer awareness.
PRINCE Alfred College is adding a splash of pink to its traditional maroon sports kit.
The school’s football, hockey, rugby and soccer teams are all wearing pink socks on Saturday (August 9) for its “Pull on your Socks” campaign to raise money and awareness for the McGrath Foundation.
Year 12 student and footballer Braydon Cordingley pushed the initiative at Princes after his sister Eleanor, a volunteer at the foundation, co-ordinated it at Walford Anglican School.
“In total 170-odd boys will be wearing pink socks,” Cordingley says.
“There was a bit of apprehension at first about boys wearing pink but once the idea settled in the school and boys have been really accepting.
“Everyone’s happy to do it because they realise how good a cause it is.”
The McGrath Foundation raises money to fund breast cancer nurses across Australia and promotes breast cancer awareness.
Princes’ footy squads will be donning the socks against long-time rival Sacred Heart and Cordingley says the players are looking forward to championing the cause.
“Wearing them against Sacred Heart being a big match and big occasion, should help it go further.”
There will be pink footballs, scoreboards and goal umpiring flags at Princes’ First XVIII game.
The school’s coaches will also wear pink shirts.
Princes’ other fundraising initiatives include sausage sizzles, raffles and asking for donations.
