Old Ignatians steal victory with two after the siren goals against Modbury

A remarkable 75-metre bomb after the siren has helped to secure a rebuilding division two Adelaide Footy League club’s second win of the season. Is this local footy’s greatest ever goal? Watch the scenes here.

Old Ignatians' Liam Elliott-Mitchell kicks a 75-metre bomb

A huge 75-metre after the siren torpedo was the catalyst for a remarkable last second win by a rebuilding Adelaide Footy League club on Saturday.

Division two club Old Ignatians has struggled in recent seasons, suffering relegation from D1 in 2023 and narrowly avoiding another drop to D3 last year, but now sits at 2-2 in 2025 after a dramatic 75-metre bomb by Liam Elliottt-Mitchell after the three-quarter time siren and a last second winner from Darcy Emerson.

Old Iggies led all day against visitors Modbury and built a three-goal lead after the three-quarter time siren with an astounding 75-metre torpedo goal by Liam Elliott-Mitchell, but needed a late forward 50 mark and goal by Emerson to get the job done, the hosts winning 9.10 (64) to 9.9 (63) in front of a raucous crowd.

“To be honest, I thought there was about a 50-50 chance of Liam kicking that goal at three-quarter time at best,” coach Daryl Spencer said.

“It was a great goal, a fair roost and it gave us a lift.

“The team was up and about but footy can be a grind - we knew the job wasn’t done and as it turned out the game went down to the very end.

“When Darcy took that mark at the end I was confident he’d put it through, he’s a beautiful kick and it was a great moment for a young lad to experience.”

Division two premier in 2021 under coach Damian Boots, Old Ignatians managed to survive the 2022 D1 season but would eventually lose over 20 players from that year’s side through the next two seasons.

Spencer’s side had lost by a kick to Adelaide Uni the week before Saturday’s win against Modbury and the coach believed the weekend’s close victory could be a big step forward for his young group.

“We’ve got a young squad so obviously tight wins are important for confidence and experience.

“The boys have been through a bit of a journey so getting wins on the board is big.

“There’s still a lot of inexperience so we have to keep improving and have to learn how to win, learn from our results.

“We have a lot of potential and I’m impressed by the boys every single day, I never question their commitment and I love coaching them.”

The club will take on second spot Goodwood Saints away from home on Saturday, another big test for Spencer’s players.

“It’s always a big game against Goodwood Saints.

“We lost a couple times to them last year and we know they’ve blown some teams away early this season so we have to be ready and produce four strong quarters.”
