Aldinga coach Trevor Mitton has thrown a grenade among footy supporters and clubs by declaring current Southern Football League pacesetter Noarlunga as the best team outside of the SANFL.
Mitton, who last Sunday was reappointed as Aldinga’s coach for next season, said the Shoes were as good a side he had seen going around.
The Sharks mentor has had extensive experience as a coach and player in the SFL, including holding the reins at Noarlunga.
He also coached in the SANFL (under league level) and amateur footy clubs, including division one mainstay Goodwood Saints.
“I know it is going to cause a lot of debate but I‘m prepared to start the talk and back it up,” Mitton said.
“Line after line, names across the board. I would go into bat for that side.
“Some people screw up their noses at the SFL and say the comp is not strong because of what happens to some of the bottom teams.
“But you can’t hold that against teams like Noarlunga and Flagstaff Hill, which have won the past three flags.
“Those teams can’t help it if they are so strong. I can’t see every team from other competitions but this Noarlunga side is quite special.”
The Shoes have not missed a beat this season on their way to a dominant undefeated campaign in the SFL.
Two of Noarlunga’s 14-straight wins have come against reigning premier Flagstaff Hill by 62 points in round two and 52 points in round 11.
The Shoes smashed Mitton’s Aldinga 36.17 (233) to 1.0 (6) on Saturday at Noarlunga.
Mitton’s comments could stir up clubs such as Hills Football League powerhouse Hahndorf, Great Southern’s Mount Compass, Barossa high-flyers Tanunda and even top amateur club Prince Alfred Old Collegians in the discussion.
Meanwhile, Mitton also said he was looking forward to working with the Sharks for at least another season after signing on for 2020.
“It will be a big job but we need to re-sign players and keep players from leaving,” he said.
“We have played 79 players in both A and B grade this season and sometimes struggle to field teams.
“We need to go hard in recruiting and attracting players who want to play here.
“Even signing a marquee player would be good, giving the place somewhere you want to be.”
The Sharks are bottom of the SFL ladder with one win on the season.
