THE name Mott will forever remain in the Southern Football League history books after Noarlunga forward Nick joined his dad Jerry to be the first father/son duo to win the competition’s Mail Medal.
Nick, 25, took home the medal last Monday night with 20 votes – 28 years after Jerry won his second successive gong in 1990.
Flagstaff Hill dual medallist Michael Shearer finished second on 18 and Mathew Hodge of Christies Beach came in third place with 16 votes.
Jerry, a SFL Hall of Fame member and Noarlunga Life Member after playing 297 games with the Shoes, said it was something special for the two to share.
“Being the first father/son to win it, that’s special,” Jerry said.
“I told him I’ve still got one up on him though.
“I won two but I reckon he’s going to beat me.
“He’s going to get even better as a player and he’s got some good years ahead of him.”
Jerry won back-to-back medals in 1989 and 1990 and said the only thing better would be for his other son Thomas to snare one as well.
Nick, who also won the league’s goal kicking medal after booting 63 majors, said the win was a surprise.
“It was not expected at all, so many mids have won it and so many were in contention,” Nick said.
“So as a forward I didn’t think I would win, especially after I didn’t poll in the first three rounds.
“I’m stoked, it’s an honour to make a bit of history with dad.”
Nick said, while he would cherish the medal win, not being able to feature in the Shoes semi and preliminary finals due to injury made it a sour end to the season.
After breaking his nose during the qualifying final against Port Noarlunga, Nick returned to the field only to pull a hamstring.
The Shoes went on to win before defeats to Flagstaff Hill and Reynella knocked them out of the finals.
