Modbury meets St Peter’s Old Collegians in division two amateur football grand final
SPORTING all-rounder Tim Davey knows all about needing to make the most of grand finals. This weekend he will line up for Modbury in the division two amateur football decider.
TIM Davey knows all about needing to make the most of grand finals.
In March, he was part of the Tea Tree Gully side that lost just one game for the Grade Cricket season before suffering a shock loss to Southern District in the flag decider.
The defeat still stings but Davey has an opportunity of sorts to atone this Saturday when the sporting all-rounder lines up for Modbury Football Club in the division two amateur league grand final.
The Hawks will play St Peter’s Old Collegians and, like the Gullies, go into the clash as minor premier with just one defeat all season.
“(At Tea Tree Gully) we dominated the whole year then lost a grand final to a team we’d beaten a few times that year so it still hurts,” Davey says.
“But it goes to show that on the day anyone can win and grand finals are bloody hard to win.
“We’re confident (at Modbury) if we play at our best, we can beat anyone.
“All the young boys have lifted stepped up and we’ve just got a pretty even spread across the board.”
Davey, a division three premiership player with Modbury in 2014, is a newly crowned three-time amateur league best and fairest.
Last week the midfielder claimed the division two medal, adding to wins in 2010 and 2011.
“I thought I had a pretty solid year but didn’t expect to poll that many (votes).
“It helps when you’ve got such a good team and when you’re winning games, you’re always a chance to poll.”
In recent months, Davey has missed pre-season cricket trainings while concentrating on football.
“I love playing both and I’ll continue playing until the body stops working.”
Modbury will line up in division one next season for the first time since 2009.
“That was my first year playing senior footy and you sort of take it for granted being in div one.
“It’s pretty exciting to have another crack at it.
