Kensington trails top side Adelaide University, which has a bye in the final two-day round, by 25 points, but is just five points behind second-placed East Torrens and equal with fourth-ranked Adelaide.

ADELAIDE UNI 6/330dec ADELAIDE 249

Adelaide faces an intriguing final round this Saturday with a chance of a home final still alive.

The Buffaloes, fourth and safe for the finals, take on second-placed East Torrens at Glandore Oval with the winner almost certain to finish second or even top as current leader Adelaide University has a bye.

On Saturday Adelaide, chasing the Blacks’ 330, was dismissed late in the day for 249 in 90.2 overs, opener Ben Pengelley starring with 102 with strong backing from Patrick Page and Josh Pengelley with 48 each.

Buffaloes assistant coach Sam Raphael said his side gave everything.

“I thought the wicket was a little bit slow on both days,” Raphael said.

“But it was a brave effort on the second day.

“We almost hung on. Pagey did a good job in helping Ben (Pengelley) with 48 as he was quite sick during the week.

“So it was good he was able to get up.

“This week there will be plenty to look forward to against East Torrens. It looks like we are playing for second place and a home final.’’

PROSPECT 58 & 204 EAST TORRENS 2/173dec & 4/92

East Torrens set itself on course for an opportunity to grab a home semi-final when it beat Prospect outright at Campbelltown Memorial Oval.

The game was dedicated to former player Andrew Cranmer (twin brother of skipper Michael Cranmer) who died in February 2014 as a result of a train accident in New South Wales.

The Reds were forced to work hard for the maximum points as the Pirates dug in to make 204 in their second dig after crashing for 58 on day one in reply to the hosts’ 2/173 declared.

Lachlan Blunden (65) and Deepak Singh (40) did their best to stretch out Prospect’s second innings.

But the star of the day was Luke Robins who dominated with the ball for East Torrens with 6/50 (nine wickets for the match), while his side reached its target of 90 with four wickets

down.

Reds skipper Michael Cranmer was thrilled with his team’s effort.

“Lachy Blunden batted really well for Prospect but really our bowlers, led by Luke Robins with six wickets, bowled really well,” Cranmer said.

“It’s now up to us to beat the Buffs (Adelaide) this week in what could be a battle for top place or home final.”

Cranmer also said the day was special for the club and supporters to remember his brother Andrew.

“We have the Andrew Cranmer Foundation which is set up to raise money for our club’s juniors. It is all about helping set up that next generation of junior players coming through at the club and in Andrew’s memory.’’

PORT ADELAIDE 8/343dec SOUTHERN DISTRICT 4/345

Port Adelaide Cricket Club provided the venue but Southern District put on the show as the Stingrays’ Josh Barrett and Brendan McCormack blasted their side to victory.

Chasing the Magpies’ 343 at Port Adelaide Reserve, Southern skipper Barrett and vice-captain McCormack combined for a second-wicket stand of 204 to lead their side home on 4/345 from 81 overs.

Barrett charged to an unbeaten 182, while McCormack made 71 after the Stingrays lost opener Nick Bowen for 53 when the score was 81.

With wickets in hand late in the day Southern increased the run rate to easily haul in the target.

Barrett batted all day, faced 237 balls and smashed 23 boundaries, including eight sixes.

McCormack struck seven fours and a six.

Barrett said he was thrilled with the team’s effort and pleased he could play a big part in the win.

“To get those runs was a really good effort. It was a bit tricky early,” Barrett said.

“Before the game someone said it was the first time we had chased down a score like that this season and won.

“I was happy with my form and I thought with Brendan (McCormack) we combined well.

“We bat quite differently and I think that worked. On the other hand it is a bit disappointing we won’t make finals.

“We have only lost three games this season. So we were a bit unlucky to miss the finals but we want to finish the season off well.’’

Barrett’s 182 was his biggest score this season but his career high remains at 201 against Woodville in 2017-18.

Southern is home to Woodville to finish the minor round with the winner finishing fifth on the ladder.

TEA TREE GULLY 166 & 197 WOODVILLE 1/195 & 3/170

Woodville’s late-season charge continued when it beat Tea Tree Gully outright at home.

Tom Andrews (80 not out) and Dean Fry (42 not out) combined for an unbeaten fourth-wicket stand of 113 to see their side home in the second dig with 3/170 after the Bulls made 197 in their second knock.

Opener Josh Macey topscored for the Bulls with 39, while five other players, led by Joe Gatting (25), made scores in the twenties.

The former Prospect captain snared 6/58 as they held TTG to 166 in the first innings before taking another 5/62 in the second stint.

Woodville led by 29 runs on the first innings after declaring on 1/195.

STURT 284 WEST TORRENS 9/238

Sturt played out a gripping draw with West Torrens in a dead rubber at Price Memorial Oval.

The Blues set a 284-run target and the Eagles held on in the final over to finish with 9/238.

Bailey Capel made 65 before he was bowled by Max Parker to get West Torrens off to a nice start with a 79-run partnership alongside opening partner Tom Woolford.

But when Sturt’s Jacob Dick removed Woolford for 44, it was the start of a haul which saw Dick finish with 5/59.

Nick Maegraith did his best to hold on for the Eagles as he finished unbeaten on 34 alongside Josh Slee to ensure the points were shared.

Tim Oakley starred for West Torrens on day one with 8/73.

WOMEN’S WRAP

Southern District kept alive its slim hopes of making the women’s finals when it beat Kensington at Parkinson Oval last Sunday.

Batting first, the Stingrays made 200 from 48.3 overs with Kylie Rattray, at number seven, starring with 73 off 63 balls.

Ella Wilson (25) and skipper Jess O’Reilly (21) were next best with the bat.

In reply Kensington was dismissed for 143 after it was cruising on 1/63.

But Hannah Sampson led the Southern fightback to grab three wickets as the Browns stumbled to 5/73.

Sampson finished with the stunning figures of 3/6 off 10 overs which included six maidens.

Keely Stone was the other multiple wickettaker with 2/16.

In Sunday’s other clash, Northern Districts needed runs from the tail to edge past Sturt at Salisbury Oval.

The Blues set 5/194 batting first after a more than handy unbeaten 80 from Stacey Oates.

The Jets then looked in trouble early in reply on 3/14.

Stephanie Beazleigh steadied the ship with 24 before Kasey Wendland topscored with 42.

Neisha Iles (18 not out) hit the winning runs as Northern reached 9/197.

The Jets are second on the ladder, just behind top side Sturt, but ahead of third-placed West Torrens, fourth-ranked Kensington and bottom team Southern.
