FOOTY COMEBACK SEALED AFTER THE SIREN

Every kid who grows up in Australia loving footy dreams of kicking a match-winning goal after the siren – and Bradley Rayson lived it on Saturday.

The pressure was immense with his Kenilworth side three points down, but the wingman struck the ball perfectly from more than 50m out to seal a crucial win over division five ladder leader Pooraka.

The Kookaburras, who trailed by five points going into the final term, prevailed 11.10 (76) to 10.13 (73) in the Adelaide Footy League clash at Lindblom Park.

Rayson, 21, described it as the best feeling he has had in football.

“I was kind of in shock after it all happened,” Rayson said.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever played in a game of football where the result’s been decided after the siren … so for it to be off your own boot is pretty special.

“People ran from everywhere – players, supporters – because it was a pretty big win for us.

“To beat the top team out there, it’s a really special win for the team.”

Rayson was spotted up by a teammate and marked on the 50m arc as the remaining seconds counted down.

The siren sounded as the 21-year-old made his approach but he remained unfazed and the long-range bomb sailed through halfway up the goalposts.

“The siren went when I was halfway through my run up but I didn’t really process it or think about, I think if I did I probably would have missed it,” he said.

“There were a few people telling me to pass it off or go for a torp but I went the drop punt and it got the job done.

“My phone was going off all Saturday night and Sunday morning.

“I even had a couple of people who I’ve never met before stop me in the street to talk about it. It’s got around a fair bit.”

It was fifth-placed Kenilworth’s sixth win for the season.

Interestingly, all but one of the Kookaburra’s victories in 2021 have come on the road with a 1-4 win-loss record at home.

Kenilworth coach Robert Prime was pleased Rayson got the side over the line after losing their last two by four and nine points.

“For all the players to fall to it probably landed in pretty good hands,” Prime said.

“It was a good reward for him too, he’s been playing some really good footy and has come on really well this year.”

Rayson’s big effort also won him a nomination for the round 11 goal of the week, which you can vote on below.

The Kookaburras face another tough test at home to local rival Colonel Light Gardens this Saturday.

BAGS OF BAGS

Conditions weren’t ideal it was apparently a good day to be a forward on Saturday.

A stack of forwards feasted in front of the big sticks and recorded big bags of goals in a range of divisions.

Leading the pack was Marion spearhead Anthony Farrugia, who slotted 11 majors in a 125-point win for the Rams in C2.

Former Woodville-West Torrens player Todd Culley showed his class by bagging 10 in Gaza’s 219-point thumping of division three battlers Portland.

He was joined on that number by Sacred Heart Old Collegians’ Michael Johnston (C2) and Colonel Light Gardens’ Paul McInerney (D5R) as they also recorded two handfuls.

McInerney’s teammate Timothy Day and A grade Lion Bryce Smith were two of five players across the divisions to slot eight goals.

A further seven players bagged themselves seven goals, including Pembroke Old Scholars’ Alex Forster, who leads the entire competition with 70 majors for the season.

RESTRICTIONS RETURN

We’ve been pretty lucky as a football community in South Australia to not have our beloved local competitions affected by Covid as much as interstate.

But some restrictions have returned which will impact Adelaide Footy League and country clubs this weekend.

As of 12:01am Tuesday 29 June 2021, the Emergency Management (Public Activities No 25) (COVID-19) Direction 2021 came...

Patrons must be seated when consuming food or beverages inside, but not outside.

However one of the more obscure rules introduced by the state government to impact footy is singing is not permitted at indoor premises.

It means winning teams will need to take their team songs outside of the changerooms.

See the SA Recreation and Sport post above for the full restrictions impacting football.
