An emerging defensive star in South Australian netball has re-signed with her Premier League club as it aims to bounce back from a heartbreaking 2022 grand final loss.
Jessie Grenvold – who represented both the SA U19s and Australia U21s last season – has committed to Contax in a significant move for the club after losing Thunderbirds training partner Molly Watson for the start of season 2023.
“It feels amazing to remain with Contax. I’ve played here since I was a junior and I’ve never thought about leaving,” Grenvold said.
“I’ve always felt privileged to play here, we’ve got amazing coaches and such an amazing group of girls so I can’t wait for next season.”
Grenvold experienced a breakout season in 2022, dominating in defence for Contax and SA, and earning a spot in the national U21s as a result.
She was also selected for SA’s Southern Force side in the Australian Netball Championships, eventually winning MVP for the team.
“I’ve had a lot of exposure to some really good netball through the past year and I’m going to bring that experience I gained on and off the court with me into next season,” Grenvold said.
“We’re lucky to have a lot of players with a large amount of experience at Contax so I think it will help us as the competition continues to strengthen.”
Grenvold joins young gun shooter Kayla Graham in re-signing at the club after falling to Matrics in last season’s big dance.
The star defender believed the club still had what it took to go deep again in 2023, despite a host of other clubs adding significant talent in the offseason.
“It’s really exciting to see a few changes at other clubs. I guess we’re used to the competition being a bit of a battle between Contax and Matrics so we’re all excited to potentially be facing a tough test each and every week.
“I think we definitely have what it takes to get to another grand final and make up for last season – if you look at our 2022 season we were really strong for the most part but ultimately we didn’t quite turn up for the grand final and Matrics played some super good netball.
“We’re already looking very good heading into next year and I think we’re all excited and motivated by the fact we’re working for redemption.”
