Nominations for the 2024 Advertiser, Sunday Mail and Department for Education School Sports Awards will close this Sunday with SA’s top young student athletes are set to be crowned later this month.
There are three major awards in 2024 – individual competitors, individual student officials, and teams, with female and male and primary and secondary categories all included.
Enrolled primary or secondary students between the ages of 10-18 are eligible.
11-year-old St Martin de Porres School student Orlando Eitel said he was thrilled to be nominated after a strong year in diving which included success in the Diving SA championships and in the School Sport Australia Diving Championships.
“It’s really cool, I haven’t been nominated for any awards before,” The Year 6 student said.
“It shows people are noticing my hard work and hours spent at training.
“This would be a win for me and my coaches, because they make me want to train and improve.”
15-year-old Seaford Secondary College student Allegra Crean is among those nominated in the individual secondary section after impressing in the pool as a versatile swimmer.
Recently selected to SASI’s swimming talent identification program, Crean competed in and won bronze at the Australian Age Swimming Championships and was also the youngest South Australian selected for Olympic qualifiers at the Australian Swimming Trials.
“It feels like a great achievement and it shows that my hard work is paying off,” she said.
“To win would be something I would be very proud of because I have worked very hard to get to where I am now.”
SA’s history-making U15 girls School Sport Australia football champions are a standout in the teams category.
Made up of students from across the state and coached by Jordan Tronnolone, the side became the first SA girls team to win the School Sport Australia football championships when it defeated NSW in August.
16-year-old student official Lachlan McPherson is one of the standouts in the officials section of the awards.
The Roma Mitchell Secondary College student has represented Football SA and School Sport SA in refereeing national and local soccer matches and also recently officiated at the U12 championships in WA.
