Reigning Hills Football League premier Hahndorf sent the competition a stark reminder it is still at the peak of its powers after a 102-point thumping of previously undefeated Lobethal on Saturday.
The Magpies were at their “absolute pinnacle”, according to Tigers coach Matt Fuller, in the 25.16 (167) to 10.5 (65) thrashing at Hahndorf Oval.
The hosts led 4.5 to 2.1 at the first change before turning the screw and kicking eight, six and seven goals in the next three quarters.
Lobethal, which held a 3-0 win-loss record coming into the match, stood little chance as Hahndorf hit its straps.
“I haven’t seen them play that good before,” Tigers coach Fuller said.
“I feel like that was probably them at their absolute pinnacle to be honest.
“They were very, very good and we just looked like we weren’t even there with it to rock up from the first bounce.
“They definitely did a number on us and deserved it. “
Fuller hoped his side, which had a significant overhaul in the off-season, would improve with more games under its belt.
“I’m sure after a few more rounds we’ll be better than what we were on the weekend and hopefully we should get another crack at them,” he said.
Hahndorf coach Matt Golding said the result exceeded expectations.
“We were really confident we could get the job done but probably not by that margin,” Golding said.
“I think it was a day where things clicked for us and, to be fair to Lobethal, they’re a much better side than that.
“I think we’ll see them again … they’ll be around the mark towards the end of the year.”
Former Adelaide Crow Kyle Cheney starred for the Magpies while Jarryn Male and Tom Babidge booted five goals each.
“We keep a few numbers on team stats, we don’t do any individual stats but it would probably be worth watching the game back to see what Cheney did have,” Golding said.
“It would had to have been 40-plus touches and 15-plus marks I think.
“He’s so smart the way he reads the ball, positions his body really well and he seems to be covering the ground better than he has in previous years.”
In other results, a late goal from Joe Beilby snared a two-point win for Onkaparinga Valley at home to Uraidla Districts.
The Dogs have been no stranger to a close contest this season came out on top in another tight one after Beilby’s set shot went through with just seconds to spare.
Nairne Bremer overcame poor kicking to record its first victory of the season, a 12.23 (95) to 8.4 (52) triumph over Echunga.
Gun recruit Darcy Hourigan booted five goals and Nick Jaensch was influential for the Rams, who managed two victories last season upon promotion to division one.
Meanwhile Mount Barker was too strong for Mount Lofty in a 39-point win.
