Hatherleigh forward Sam Telfer boots 21.1 against Robe in Mid South Eastern Football League

An SA local footballer has entered the history books with the biggest performance his club has seen in almost 40 years.

A local South Australian forward kicked the most goals in one game for his club in almost 40 years during a remarkable performance on Saturday.

Hatherleigh A Grade’s Sam Telfer had only kicked six goals in six games in the Mid South Eastern Football League this season before booting an incredible 21 majors against Robe in a 116-point win over the weekend.

Home supporters could not believe their eyes as Telfer dismantled fifth placed Robe’s defence, kicking four goals in the first quarter, three in the second, six in the third and eight in the fourth.

The 27-year-old’s haul was one of the biggest in the league’s history and the second biggest at Hatherleigh since Craig Skeer set a club record of 24 in one game in 1986.

“Craig was my first senior coach when I started in 2013 and coached us to a flag so to be congratulated by the man who pretty much taught me everything I know at the A Grade level was pretty great,” Telfer said.

“I was just in the zone I guess – the midfield was dominant and kept getting me the ball and after a while I was pretty confident I could slot a fair few home.”

While Hatherleigh sits in the top two of the league so far this season, Telfer had experienced a slow start to the year, struggling with fitness and injury.

He said he was as surprised as anyone by his display on Saturday.

“It was a bit of a weird and surprising feeling,” Telfer said.

“I guess it’s just hard to describe – goals just kept happening and things kept going my way for four quarters.”

“The way my teammates got around me during and after the game was great but I have to credit them for the performance as well, only two of my goals were from open play so they were hitting me for a lot of set shots.”

While the individual success has come at just the right time for Telfer, the plaudits are secondary to the ultimate goal this season – winning another premiership with Hatherleigh.

The Eagles sit four points below top spot Kalangadoo, and eight points ahead of third placed Mt Burr with six rounds left before finals.

“We’ve recruited well and we’ve got a very good mix this year, a lot of guys around that 25-year-old age bracket,” Telfer said.

“I definitely think we can go all the way.”
