Starlet gymnasts Chloe Sharpe and Charlie Haigh have taken their body-bending skills to new heights recently, achieving highly at state and national levels.
Both just 11 years old, the Glenelg Primary School students have solidified themselves as two of the country’s best young athletes and have been named as nominees for the primary section of the The Advertiser, Messenger and Department for Education School Sports Awards 2021.
Chloe Sharpe, an aerobic gymnastics specialist, was overjoyed by the nod.
“It’s very exciting and I’m really grateful to be considered,” she said.
“It would be unbelievable to win and great reward for the work my coaches and I have put in.”
Part of the Seacliff Aerobic Gymnastics Club, Chloe started aerobics at just 6 years old, quickly working her way to the top for her age group.
She has represented South Australia in three straight years, and performed so well at the most recent nationals in the Gold Coast that she was selected for the National Development Squad.
“I love competing and representing my state,” Chloe said.
“I’ve really improved and I just want to keep improving and achieving.”
Fellow nominee Charlie Haigh has also been at the top of his game recently.
Starting the sport at just five years old, and a member of ‘Alpha Gymnastics’, Charlie specialises in the trampoline and artistic fields.
He has won overall state titles in trampoline and artistic gymnastics, and most recently won silver in the level 5 trampoline at the Australian Gymnastics Championships.
“I love everything about gymnastics and especially trampoline,” Charlie said.
“I was pretty nervous at the national championships but to finish with a silver medal made me so excited and happy.
“I feel happy and proud to be nominated for the School Sport Awards. It would be one of the best things ever to win.”
While they are both thrilled with receiving recognition for their efforts through the School Sport Awards, both Chloe and Charlie still have their minds set on continuing their impressive list of achievements.
With their preparation already underway for the next staet championships, their motivation is clear.
“I just want to keep improving and winning wherever I can and then eventually I hope to make the national squad and compete overseas,” Chloe said.
“I’m focused on doing well at the state champs and if I can keep performing one day I would like to go to the Olympics,” Charlie added.
The School Sports Awards are the joint initiative of The Advertiser, Messenger and Department for Education.
There are three major awards in 2021 – individual competitors, individual student officials, and teams, with female and male, rural and metropolitan, primary and secondary categories all included.
