Goolwa-Port Elliot parts ways with coach Trevor Jenkin in Great Southern Football League

A struggling local SA footy club has parted ways with its new coach just four rounds into the 2024 season. Here’s why the move was made.

A local SA footy club has parted ways with its new coach just four games into the 2024 season.

Great Southern Football League club Goolwa-Port Elliot, which tallied two wins in 2023, parted ways with new coach Trevor Jenkin this week after its fourth consecutive loss to begin the year – a 329-1 result against league leader Victor Harbor at home.

The Magpies appointed Jenkin to replace departing playing-coach Reece Slape, now playing for Echunga in the Hills FL, but both the club and Jenkin made the mutual decision to part ways after Saturday’s disappointing result.

“During his short time at our club, Trevor has played an integral part, and his long-term vision for our team had the full support of the committee,” president Lauren Dart said.

“Unfortunately, recent circumstances have made his position untenable and we have mutually agreed to part ways.”

The club has appointed life members Dale Cuthbert and Trent Griffin as interim coaches, while Josh Koop will also join the A Grade staff after serving as the reserves coach.

“Their experience and dedication will ensure continuity and stability during this period of change,” Dart said.

The Magpies have a faced a number of challenges during recent GSFL seasons, going winless in 2022 before winning just two games last year and now sitting bottom of the ladder with a percentage of just 11.3.

Dart said the club was working through a strategic plan to ensure future success.

“While we navigate through this transition, the committee is actively working on our strategic plan to ensure that all areas of our club continue to grow towards a successful future.

“We are committed to upholding the values and standards that make our club great.

“We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the community for their unwavering support during this challenging time – their encouragement and loyalty mean the world to us and we are grateful for their ongoing commitment.

“Together, we will continue to strive for excellence and build a brighter future for our club.”

Jenkins was one of three A Grade coaches to depart their clubs across local SA footy this week, with Adelaide Plains FL club Virginia and Wayne Knowles parting ways and Adelaide Footy League outfit Elizabeth signing past player Matt Switala to replace John Lawrence after its tough start to 2024.
