Here is what caught our attention in round four of 2022:
CLUB FAVOURITE CELEBRATES BIG 200
Goodwood Saints premiership player Josh Slape played out his 200th senior game for the club on Saturday in a strong 99-70 Indigenous Round win.
A staple of the Saints’ senior group, Slape has played a number of roles as one of the club’s most reliable players in its recent years of success.
He said the feeling of completing 200 games for the club he loves was “unreal.”
“I’m very proud of the achievement, to play 200 games for Goodwood,” Slape said.
“It’s such a great and historic club.
“I’m glad we were able to get the win against a tough side despite a bit of a challenging start, it was an all-round great day.”
Slape arrived at Goodwood as a junior in 2006, and eventually worked his way up to the senior ranks.
Coach Luke Donaldson said he was the epitome of what it takes to reach success at the senior level.
“Slapey is evidence that hard work pays off,” Donaldson said.
“It was absolutely great to get the win for him.”
During his time at Goodwood, Slape has many highlights, including playing in a winning division one grand final in 2020 against Rostrevor OC.
However, he said that while the premiership was a standout memory, his time at the club had been about the relationships he has made.
“Obviously we’ve won a bit along the way but I’ve also made a lot of mates at the club which has been fantastic,” Slape said.
“We’ve managed to keep a lot of guys together through the years and I think that’s why we’ve been so successful.
“Everyone’s here for the right reasons and everyone gets along which I think says a lot about the club and everyone involved.”
While Goodwood has experienced an inconsistent start in what has been a competitive early season in division one, Slape said the current group had strong potential.
He hasn’t ruled out winning a second A Grade flag.
“We’ve been good at times and had some bad patches too but the league’s really even this season, which in itself is a good challenge,” he said.
“I think if we can stick with it and continue to work on some things we can go pretty far and give the year a good crack.”
IN-FORM FORWARD KICKS 700
Veteran West Croydon forward Luke Woodcock marked his club’s upset 85-94 division six win over Rosewater with his 700th goal for the Hawks on Saturday.
Woodcock was on fire throughout the contest, causing headaches for the home defence on his way to five majors for the day.
Deep into the game – which was a neck-and-neck affair – the talented target-man took a mark on a strong lead inside the 50 and slotted home his 700th goal for the club, much to the delight of the away support.
Woodcock has played for West Croydon’s seniors since 2012 and has well and truly made his mark on the club, notably booting a career-best 83 goals in 18 games during the 2019 season.
He struggled slightly during last season, kicking 15 goals in 10 games for the club, but is on track for a big 2022, with 14 goals kicked in the first four games.
HARVEY CELEBRATES GAMES RECORD
Despite a huge 4.4 (28) to 20.13 (133) loss to PHOS Camden in the league’s C Grade, Saturday was a day to remember for Gaza veteran Troy Harvey as he broke the club’s longstanding senior games record with 422 appearances.
“It’s definitely surreal,” Harvey said of the achievement.
“I just love the club … it’s been a massive part of my life.”
It’s a significant piece of history for the club, which was established 119 years ago, and Harvey remains one of its most loved characters.
The dedicated clubman – who often also helps out as a volunteer – started his senior career at the Eagles in 1995 aged 16 and while he missed out on an A Grade flag due to injury, he managed to win a B Grade premiership in 2007.
