Adelaide Footy League Marks of the Week

A star recruit has taken out the Keith Sims OAM Adelaide Footy League division one medal after a spectacular home and away season.

Glenunga’s Abe Davis, who tallied 97 SANFL League games for South Adelaide and Sturt before joining the Rams in the pre-season, beat out Prince Alfred OC’s Hayden Jolly by two votes on Monday night to claim the honour.

Davis has been a force for the Rams this year, dominating as a strong contested ball winner in the middle and also rotating up front to hit the scoreboard as a target forward.

“It was a really proud moment, not just for myself but for the footy club as well,” Davis said.

“Obviously it’s an individual honour but I think it really comes down to the team, we’ve got so many guys who perform each week and play their roles and that has helped me play at my best.”

Davis was one of the first players the Rams looked to bring in after losing in the first round of finals last year, the star big already having a relationship with coach Nathan Grima after his time with Sturt.

He said he had rediscovered his love for the game after joining the division one outfit.

“I’m just back to really enjoying my footy,” Davis said.

“Nathan (Grima) has been really good for me, he gives me a lot of freedom to play around the ball and win it at the source, but also rotate up front when we might need it.

“The best thing about him is he gets around each player and doesn’t ask you to do anything you’re not capable of.

“He’s simplified the game plan and built a strong team first culture and we’re feeding off it.”

Glenunga, this year’s minor premier, will take on Prince Alfred OC at home in this weekend’s qualifying final, the winner booking a spot in the grand final.

Davis said the team was expecting a tight contest against a strong opponent.

“They’re a really impressive side, their skill and ability to get the ball on the outside and use their runners is impressive but also concerning for us.

“If we can really focus on our own game and what we need to execute I think we’ll be a strong chance.”
