Gaza Football Club, SANFL appeal hearing to begin today

While some charges have been dropped, the Gaza Football Club’s appeal of a SANFL penalty for a number of alleged salary cap breaches will begin in a hearing today.

The Gaza Football Club’s appeal hearing will begin today as it attempts to exonerate itself of any wrongdoing after being fined a record amount for alleged salary cap breaches dating back to 2018.

The SANFL handed the Eagles an SA sport record $380,000 fine last September for alleged breaches including sign-on payments and weekly player payments.

Gaza president Don Rosella is also facing a 10-year suspension from holding any official role in SA footy.

The club engaged leading lawyer Greg Griffin and appealed the penalty.

While some charges were recently dropped by the SANFL, the league will continue with charges related to alleged overpayments in 2018 and 2019, as well as charges over the payment of alleged $4000 sign-on fees in 2021 and 2022.

Neither the Gaza Football Club nor any individuals involved is accused of any criminal wrongdoing.

The hearing is scheduled to be heard in front of a QC over three days starting from today.
