Mallala has lost club champion and captain Jake Birchmore to the RSMU Hawks in the North Eastern FL, a move which should have a significant impact on the side’s 2023 premiership chances after it lost last year’s prelim to Balaklava.

Two Wells has added young Central District key position player Jakob Thomson to an already star-studded line-up including midfielders Luke Barnett and Dylan Wise and should be a major shot at three flags in a row this year, while 2022 runner-up Balaklava – led by league medallist Lachy Michael – has also added multiple names to its list such as Brad Lynn (Rostrevor OC) and Nick McElroy (Blyth-Snowtown).

Virginia will try to recover from the loss of Paul Puopolo this season after adding Sturt premiership player Byron Sumner but will find it hard to top sides like Angle Vale and Hummocks/Watchman, despite the latter losing gun forward Josh Studham.

Hamley Bridge would need a major effort to move up the ladder, while United will be a club to watch after going without a win last season.

The Tigers have added Woodville-West Torrens premiership midfielder Jarred Allmond as playing-coach in one of the biggest local footy moves this year.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

United’s drastic turnaround

The addition of Jarred Allmond and former Woodville-West Torrens teammate Angus Rowntree could see United go from experiencing a winless season 2022 to being a finals contender this year.

With added SANFL premiership experience and leadership a charge up the ladder may be a surprise but is not out of the question.

Barnett reclaims medal

Luke Barnett lost the Mail Medal to Balaklava’s Lachlan Michael last season but the Two Wells superstar was still near his brilliant best through the middle.

With Two-Wells looking as strong as ever on paper this year, expect another big campaign from the club favourite.

Virginia drops from finals contention

The Rams have done well to be proactive in recruitment this year after losing star player Paul Puopolo to Adelaide Footy League club Hope Valley but with United improving drastically they may find the task of staying in contention for the top four slightly too tall.

PREDICTED LADDER

1. Two Wells

2. Balaklava

3. Mallala

4. Angle Vale

5. Hummocks/Watchman

6. United

7. Virginia

8. Hamley Bridge

The former Sturt midfielder will provide a boost for Virginia after it lost Puopolo.

If he can live up to his billing on the ball and up front the club may avoid the bottom of the ladder.

JARRED ALLMOND

(United)

The former WWT premiership midfielder remains the biggest signing in the APFL for 2023 and could turn United around as playing-coach.

LUKE BARNETT

WILLASTON

Nickname: Donnybrooks

Founded: 1889

Premierships: 22. 1889, 1896, 1897, 1903, 1915, 1928, 1930, 1933, 1935, 1937, 1939, 1941, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1961, 1972, 1978, 1980, 1985, 1988, 1999

Tanunda has lost Zane Kirkwood as he joins Flagstaff Hill as coach in a move which will sting the Magpies, but the club will be hoping Sturt premiership player Rune Gilfoy can slot in beside league B&F and former Double Blues teammate Sam Colquhoun.

Nuriootpa will again be well-primed for a premiership push with the Tigers retaining multiple star players including Mitch Norton and grand final best on ground (Hurn Medallist) Brad Hoepner.

South Gawler, led by star midfielder and Mail Medallist Steve Burton as well as veteran key forward Dean Cutting, will enter the season as favourite despite a disappointing end to 2022 against Nuriootpa, while Barossa District should also be around the mark after retaining Darren Shillabeer and adding North Adelaide and PNU young gun Lachy Webb to bolster its ruck position.

Angaston, Kapunda, Willaston, Gawler Central and Freeling have all retained their 2022 sides for the most part, but Kapunda and Angaston look the most likely of the pack to compete for finals with big guns like Ari Rigney and Fraser Evans going around again this season for Kapunda and Steve Summerton and Jay Shannon with Angaston.

Barossa District, Gawler Central, Light, Nuriootpa, South Gawler, Tanunda and Willaston will all have teams in the senior women’s competition.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Bulldogs finish top two

Barossa District experienced a solid 2022 season led by former Central District midfielder Brendan Dew and star forward Darren Shillabeer but the addition of promising young Adelaide Footy League ruckman Lachy Webb as well as Hectorville leader Jake Mazzone could take the Bulldogs to the next level.

Pisani takes out Mail Medal

Former Central District onballer Flynn Pisani has been a machine in the contest and on the outside for South Gawler and put together his best season in local footy so far last year.

With Steve Burton undoubtedly set to garner extra attention from opposition this year, look for Pisani to wreak havoc.

Tanunda to drop

The Magpies finished two points above fourth placed Barossa District and four above Angaston last season but the loss of star mid Zane Kirkwood might mean the side fails to achieve the same in 2023.

PREDICTED LADDER

1. South Gawler

2. Barossa District

3. Nuriootpa

4. Angaston

5. Tanunda

6. Kapunda

7. Gawler Central

8. Freeling

9. Willaston

Pisani worked as the perfect midfielder next to Burton last season but could standout as the main force on the ball this year after a dazzling pre-season.

JAKE MAZZONE

(Barossa District)

The star player for Hectorville in the Adelaide Footy League last season and the catalyst for the Hounds’ division five flag, Mazzone could help Barossa District take the next step in the BLG.

SAM COLQUHOUN

The former Sturt and Port Adelaide mid has starred at Tanunda for multiple years and will be one to watch again this season as he and the Magpies look to fill the hole left by Kirkwood.

EASTERN EYRE FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2022 grand final: Ports 10.13 (73) d Eastern Ranges 11.4 (70)

Mail Medallist: Cooper Llewellyn (Ports)

Leading goalkicker: Cooper Llewellyn (Ports) – 39

Major ins: Nil

Major outs: Aedan Lyon (Ports to Barmera Monash), Corey Waters (CEU to Balaklava), Saul Tonkin (Cowell to West Whyalla), Regan Taheny (Eastern Ranges to Hummocks-Watchman)

Clubs:

Nickname: Bulldogs

PORTS

Nickname: Magpies

Founded: 1989

Premierships: 3. 2017, 2021, 2022

Reigning premier Ports will head into the season as heavy favourite after retaining Cooper Llewellyn, club legend Sid Masters and playing-coach Aseri Raikiwasa, while Ranges should again be in contention despite losing star forward Regan Taheny, the club holding on to superstar onballer Jack Kenny.

Sid Masters played only seven games for Ports last season after fitness issues but still kicked 32 goals.

The iconic Eastern Eyre key forward could be back to his best this year and should prove almost impossible to stop next to the Raikiwasa brothers and Cooper Llewellyn.

The Cowell Cats will look to put a winless 2022 season behind them after signing Kym Martens as new coach and retaining the likes of midfielders Justin Mills and Wayne Piggott but look unlikely to move from bottom of the ladder with Ian Jericho’s Central Eyre United and Reece Rayson’s Kimba both stronger on paper.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Masters boots 100

Kenny takes B&F honours

Eastern Ranges star Jack Kenny fell just short of Cooper Llewellyn for last season’s Mail Medal but should shoulder extra responsibility well after losing teammate Regan Taheny.

Kenny will need to be at his best if his club wants to go all the way and the midfielder is no stranger to big performances.

Magpies go undefeated

A 16-point round eight loss was all that prevented Ports from remaining unbeaten last season but with the Magpies retaining the bulk of its list and having Masters back, look for them to soar to a 12-0 record and win out in finals.

PREDICTED LADDER

1. Ports

2. Ranges

3. Central Eyre United

4. Kimba

5. Cowell

Premierships: 20. 1905, 1926, 1931, 1932, 1933, 1947, 1950, 1956, 1959, 1962, 1963, 1979, 1980, 1989, 1996, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013

The Hills Football League’s top division has a lot to live up to this year after a thrilling 2022 season finished with an extra time drought-breaking premiership win over Hahndorf for Mitch Grigg and Lobethal.

The Tigers will be without Grigg in season 2023 after the star midfielder’s departure to junior club Athelstone, but should remain a major threat after retaining the rest of their group, including star mids Aidan Riley and Peter Bampton.

Hahndorf sits as premiership favourite yet again with captain Sam Williams returning after missing the tail end of season 2022, including the big dance.

Mount Barker, led by young gun midfielder and 2022 Mail Medalist Sam Callins as well as former Essendon and Sturt forward Jordan Houlihan, should be a major threat this season after skyrocketing to third in 2022, while Onkaparinga Valley will be a club to watch after picking up former Brisbane Lion Jesse O’Brien from St Peter’s OC despite finishing bottom last season.

Uraidla Districts is set to win itself into the premiership discussion as well after retaining star forward Dean Terlich and reliable midfielder Nick Amato, while also adding Hahndorf forward Cooper Nykamp to its side.

Bridgewater/Callington will compete as a combined force with former division two club Ironbank Cherry Gardens under an agreement before a complete merger in 2024, while Blackwood will play under new coach Kieran Sporn but could be the club to drop off from the top pack after losing champion midfielder Ben Adams to Adelaide Uni.

Uraidla Districts will look to win its second straight HFL women’s flag, with Blackwood, Echunga, Hahndorf, Iron Swans, Mount Barker, Mount Lofty, Nairne Bremer, Onkaparinga Valley and Uraidla Districts all set to play in 2023.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Aidan Riley wins Mail Medal

Former Crow and Redleg Aidan Riley could be set for a standout season after stepping down from his coaching role at Lobethal to focus on playing.

Already a top player in the competition, the veteran midfielder could set himself above the rest with a load off of his shoulders.

Dogs make finals

Onkaparinga Valley only won one game last season but the acquisitions of former AFL midfielder Jesse O’Brien and Mount Lofty half-forward Connor Milde could take the Bulldogs straight into the top five and see them contend for a semi final or preliminary final spot.

Demons for the flag

With former Norwood and Melbourne gun Dean Terlich up front and ex-SANFL mid Nick Amato marshalling the midfield, what’s not to like about Uraidla Districts?

Add a skilled forward in Cooper Nykamp – who booted 43 majors for Hahndorf last season – to the mix and you have a major premiership contender.

PREDICTED LADDER

1. Hahndorf

2. Mount Barker

3. Lobethal

4. Uraidla Districts

5. Onkaparinga Valley

6. Mount Lofty

7. Nairne Bremer

8. Blackwood

9. Echunga

10. Ironbank Bridgewater

Riley could be back to his best with coaching responsibilities alleviated in season 2023.

Terlich has shaped himself into the HFL’s best forward and could lead the Demons to a premiership this season.

Western Districts completely dominated the KIFL last season behind the leadership of star midfielder and South Adelaide legend Joel Cross, but the club may struggle to compete with Wisanger this season after losing Cross to Sacred Heart OC.

The Panthers have retained star players like Mail Medallist midfielder Liam Sampson and leading goalkicker Sam Clifford, and should go close to getting revenge this season after their grand final loss to the Saints.

Kingscote should remain in the top four this season after a solid 2022 campaign, while Parndana will be favourite to take fourth ahead of Dudley United – the Eagles looking to improve on a winless season.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Wisanger takes minor premiership

While Western Districts will be coping with the loss of Cross, Wisanger’s side looks set for another grand final charge and should go close to taking top spot on the ladder.

Sampson wins second straight B&F

Liam Sampson was at his dominant best for Wisanger in season 2022, winning countless contested possessions and pushing up the front to also bag 13 goals.

With the Panthers set to fire, expect the star mid to take out yet another Mail Medal.

Dudley goes winless again

The Eagles have experienced a major turnover since finishing second in season 2021 and it could be a long time until the club returns to being competitive.

The side will be hoping for a big season from veteran forward Clayton Willson and improved play around the ground after losing five of its 12 games by 100 or more last year.

2. Western Districts

3. Kingscote

4. Parndana

The KNTFL has seen a significant amount of player movement through the 2023 pre-season, with many clubs adding major names to their lists. 2022 wooden spooners Penola could be set for a big rise on the ladder after recruiting Western Border FL Mail Medallist Jayden Eldridge in a huge move in the South East, while Padthaway has also been busy – adding Prince Alfred OC mid Sam Buckham and Unley Mercedes Jets’ Mitch Minns.

Grand finalists Lucindale – who has lost midfielders Sam Williams and Justin Watson – and Keith – who lost midfielder and coach George Thring, have both experienced interesting starts to 2023.

Both should still remain in the top four however with a number of star players returning, including former North Adelaide forward Lewis Hender who takes over as playing-coach of the Crows.

Border District has also lost key players in Jack and Blake Helyar and may slide down the ladder as a result.

Naracoorte could be the team to beat, adding Nathan Davey to a list with Mail Medallist and former AFL player Rory Taggert and SA Country captain Matt Willson.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Naracoorte takes it all

Superstar Mail Medallist forward Rory Taggert and SA Country captain Matt Willson played their best footy toward the end of last season and were each recognised after dominant years.

With Lucindale losing veteran players and Lewis Hender facing a new challenge as playing-coach of Keith, now might be the time for Taggert, Willson and the Demons to go all the way.

Hender leads goalkicking

With George Thring now joining brother Max at Pembroke, Keith Crows star Hender has a bigger load on his shoulders as new coach.

The star forward – who led North Adelaide in goalkicking on multiple occasions – should step up to the plate on the field and lead by example.

Penola bolts up to finals

Penola had a tough 2022 season, only winning two games and finishing bottom, but huge signings of Jayden Eldridge, Jordan Galpin and Brodie Foster have the club thinking big.

If Eldridge performs as he did in the WBFL, the Eagles could soar.

Reigning premier Broughton/Mundoora heads into this year’s campaign having added Yorke Peninsula FL star Alby Price – who is coming off of a terrific season at Paskeville – and should go deep in finals yet again.

Orroroo will need to dig deep to cover for the loss of star forward and midfielder Connor O’Brien who leaves for Athelstone after booting 36 majors last year, while Southern Flinders will also need to compensate for the losses of Scott Galbraith and Mitchell Smith if it wants to finish top two again.

BMW may be one of the stories of this NAFA season, the club retaining standout midfielders Jamie Robinson and Alek Kangur while adding dominant onballer Cody Woolford from the North Eastern FL, while Crystal Brook and gun forward Daniel Hill should also be a strong chance for finals again.

Jamestown/Peterborough has remained relatively unchanged since last season but may struggle to move from the bottom.

The women’s competition will again be the ‘Mid North’ league, with Moonta, Westies, Roosters and Lions all competing.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Eagles go back-to-back

Broughton/Mundoora, led by Mail Medallist Kallis Freer, was clearly the most dominant club in the competition last season and should produce around the same level after bolstering its troops.

The Eagles will be hot favourites for the flag if they stay fit and have all their weapons available in finals.

Price takes the medal

Alby Price is coming off of one of his best seasons yet at Paskeville in the YPFL and should fit Broughton/Mundoora like a glove.

Look for him to accumulate the ball at a high level with Kallis Freer garnering more opposition attention.

BMW finishes top four

While clubs like Southern Flinders and Orroroo lost key players in the off-season, Booleroo/Melrose/Wilmington kept its squad together and added star midfielder Cody Woolford to its troops.

Look for the Lions to finally move back up to the finals footy conversation this year.

RSMU is well-poised for a premiership push this season after adding Happy Valley goal machine Ben Geytenbeek and midfielder Justin Schurgott to a line-up which already boasts players like Levi Krause and Zack Hier.

BSR will be hard to top having won three flags in a row and five of the last six, the Tigers retaining their star-studded line-up from 2022, including standout midfielder/forward Alex Morgan – who booted 20 goals and had 10 best player nods last year.

Mintaro/Manoora will miss star midfielder Cody Woolford this season but should still be in the mix for a premiership with Mail Medallist Charlie Riggs committing, while Southern Saints – led by West Adelaide premiership captain Chris Schmidt – should also challenge.

South Clare could also be a club to watch after adding Elizabeth onballer Jhye McConnell, while North Clare’s inclusion of ruckman Alex Radak should have them in the top five or six.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Hawks fly to flag

RSMU has added significant star power to its line-up for this season after losing out in the first round of the 2022 finals.

If Geytenbeek can fire this season, it may add to the Hawks’ finals scoring woes and take them to a premiership.

Geytenbeek goals leader

A long-time goal machine for Happy Valley, Geytenbeek is coming off of a leading goalkicker season in the Southern Football League and could average a handful a game in the NEFL.

Schmidt tops the lot

Former West Adelaide champion Chris Schmidt was close to his best for Southern Saints last season and played an important part in the club’s preliminary final run.

Look for the star midfielder to reach another level this year and take out the Mail Medal as a result.

Lincoln South could be the big story of season 2023 in the PLFL and sits as current favourite with former Port Adelaide and Cummins Kapinnie forward Johann Wagner signing as playing-coach and bringing star SA country backman Zane Montgomerie and Christies Beach mid Michael Mazey with him.

Marble Range and Tasman will also be in the conversation again, with young star and Mail Medallist Billy Haebich remaining at Tasman and being joined by Penola onballer Luke Walker, while Bryson Keeley joins Tynan Keeley and a wealth of other stars at the Magpies.

Boston has been active in the pre-season as it looks to put another winless campaign behind it, while Mallee Park and Wayback should rival each other for the last top four and finals spot, with the latter picking up multiple players including midfielders Seb Basso (Old Ignatians), Nick Callary (Walkerville) and half-back Matthew Robertson (Pembroke OS).

Boston has had success in the women’s league despite the Tigers’ troubles in the men’s competition, winning the grand final last month by four points over Wayback.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Wagner leads goalkicking, Lincoln South wins flag

Johann Wagner – formerly with Tasman – has returned to the PLFL after time with Cummins Kapinnie and could be set to take the league by storm as playing-coach.

If the iconic local footy forward can hit the scoreboard as efficiently as predicted, the Eagles could take out the 2023 premiership.

Tasman tops Marble Range

Both clubs have been active in the pre-season but Tasman could finish top two and potentially go all the way this year.

With young superstar Billy Haebich set to go around again with the Roosters and Penola gun Luke Walker joining him, the side should be very hard to stop.

Haebich takes second straight Mail Medal

The young gun midfielder is only just approaching his 20s and could reach another gear with a further pre-season under his belt at senior level.

Murrayville will compete in the Murray Valley Football League this season after the disbanding of the Mallee Football League but has lost star players in ruckman Alex Radak and standout midfielder Nick Bailey – who booted 13 goals in 16 games last season.

Reigning premier BSR will be favourite again after a strong 2022 having retained forward Jake Medhurst and added Mannum’s Blake Webster to the mix, while Sedan Cambrai – led by current Mail Medallist Cameron Thompson – should also remain as a premiership contender.

Superstar midfielder Blake Edmonds goes around for Browns Well again this year and should lead the Bombers to the finals along with Wunkar which has retained its top three side from last season.

Isaac Frahn will be one to watch for Paringa this season after another dominant year in ruck, while Ramco may struggle to improve on last year after a quiet pre-season.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Thompson stars to win medal again

Cam Thompson looks a shoe-in for the Mail Medal this season, backing up a dominant 2022.

A fast and skilful mid with elite disposal by foot, the reigning Mail Medallist can also move up front and win games single-handedly in front of goal.

Magpies fly past Redbacks

Sedan Cambrai came close to upsetting Blanchetown/Swan Reach in last season’s grand final but the club will have been better off from the experience.

Look for the Magpies to respond this season if they face the Redbacks yet again.

Murrayville bottoms out

The transition from the Mallee FL will not be an easy one for the Bulldogs and with Alex Radak and Nick Bailey no longer a part of the squad, Murrayville may find winning a game challenging let alone avoiding the wooden spoon.

WAIKERIE

Nickname: Magpies

Founded: 1908

Premierships: 15. 1934, 1936, 1974, 1991, 1993, 1994, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018

Waikerie could be the story of the 2023 RFL season after losing multiple stars in midfielder/forward Matt Spencely, onballer Jake Spencely and veteran Jack Grieger.

The magpies have also signed Michael Kilsby as coach after losing yet another grand final to Renmark, but he will have his work cut out for him with a significantly weaker list.

The Rovers are well-set for the season having retained the bulk of their premiership side, headlined by Mail Medallist Tim Woolford, and should go close to winning their fourth straight premiership.

Loxton could be a major player for the premiership if Waikerie falls off, with star midfielders Lachie Evans and Will Gutsche returning for another season with the Tigers to accompany Eastern Park captain Chris Knapp.

Barmera/Monash’s recruitment of River Murray FL gun Sam De Michele could also see them contend for a top four spot.

While Loxton North may still struggle after a tough 2022 season, expect some improvement after the recent signing of Woodville-West Torrens premiership mid Scott Lewis.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Magpies drop out of finals

A major power in the Riverland FL for a number of years, it could finally be time for Waikerie to drop back with the rest of the pack after losing former Crow Matt Spencely as well as multiple other key players.

Evans league’s best

Lachie Evans had a spectacular 2022 season through the middle for Loxton last season and may find even more space on the ball and up front with the Tigers adding Eastern Park mid Chris Knapp to their line-up.

Look for him to put together a Mail Medal-worthy year.

Tigers take the flag

Renmark has been king of the RFL for the past four years but with Waikerie weakened Loxton should emerge as the club’s major rival for the flag, and a stacked Tigers midfield may win it all for them.

PREDICTED LADDER

2. Loxton

3. Berri

4. Barmera/Monash

5. Waikerie

6. Loxton North

Nickname: Kangaroos

Founded: 1938

Premierships: 6. 1957, 1958, 1959, 1971, 2010, 2011

Multiple major names have departed the WBFL, including Mail Medallist Jayden Eldridge, South Gambier forward Brodie Foster, and former GWS-listed player and Millicent best and fairest Tom Hutchesson.

West Gambier could be one of the fast risers after signing former ruck Todd Lewis from PHOS Camden, Port MacDonnell gun Brandon Newton and star Kalangadoo midfielder Andrew Stone.

Reigning premier Millicent remains one of the strongest outfits in the competition despite losing Hutchesson, with a number of star players including inspirational leader Jacob Carger returning and young gun Hamish McRae signing with the club after time at Glenelg and Westminster OS.

Casterton-Sandford – a club which has experienced issues with volunteer and junior playing numbers in the pre-season – will look to move up the ladder after signing Kalangadoo forward Michael Krieger, while East Gambier will struggle to move from bottom after losing Eldridge.

South Gambier may also drop off, the Demons losing a multitude of key players including Brodie Foster, Colby Munro and the versatile Mason Hein.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

West Gambier finishes top two

The Roos snuck into finals two points and percentage ahead of Casterton Sandford last season but should mount a surge in 2023 after recruiting a number of strong players.

The arrival of Brandon Newton and Andrew Stone respectively should bolster the side’s midfield, while returning ruck Todd Lewis also adds to the club’s new-found depth.

Krieger kicks 100

Starring for Kalangadoo last season, new Casterton Sandford forward Michael Krieger booted 92 goals in 17 games.

Expect the South East star to come close to 100 this season with the Cats targeting him up front.

Demons fall from four

Minor premier and grand finalist last season, South Gambier has lost a significant amount of key players and could pay a heavy price by missing finals in 2023.

PREDICTED LADDER

1. Millicent

2. West Gambier

3. North Gambier

4. Casterton Sandford

Millicent’s inspirational leader, Carger provides a big body in the middle and can be the boost his side needs to win an important game.

MICHAEL KRIEGER

(Casterton Sandford)

Krieger’s arrival to Casterton Sandford came as a surprise to many during the pre-season.

If he can produce the games he did for Kalangadoo last year, the Cats may also surprise on the ladder.

WHYALLA FOOTBALL LEAGUE

2022 grand final: Central Whyalla 8.8 (56) d Weeroona Bay 2.12 (24)

Mail Medallist: Clayton Mesecke (Roopena)

Leading goalkicker: Kynan Buhlmann (Roopena) – 46

Major ins: William Milera (West Augusta to North Whyalla), Billy-Jo Russell (South Augusta to West Whyalla), Will Cowling (Onkaparinga Valley to North Whyalla)

Major outs: Dwayne Colson (Central Whyalla to West Augusta)

Many will expect Roopena to take the next step this season with superstar midfielder Clayton Mesecke and league leading goalkicker Kynan Buhlmann having another year together under their belts.

The Roos look strong across the board but will still have to top Central Whyalla and Weeroona Bay – the two 2022 grand finalists enjoying a strong pre-season.

Weeroona has kept champion onballer Steven Jackson and key forward Anthony Jenkinson, while Central Whyalla has managed to retain most of its side despite losing Dwayne Colson, who collected three best player nods in seven appearances during his injury-riddled 2022 season.

West Whyalla should be a major top three shout again this season and will push for top two after gaining the services of South Augusta gun Billy-Jo Russell, while North Whyalla’s signings of William Milera and Will Cowling should boost the Magpie midfield and forwardline.

South Whyalla will look for small improvements throughout the season but the Demons won’t be expected to make much noise on the ladder after a winless 2022 and a relatively quiet off-season.

THREE BIG PREDICTIONS

Roos end Roosters’ streak

Roopena suffered a tough 25-point preliminary final defeat to eventual premier Central Whyalla last season as the Roosters won their third straight WFL premiership but the Roos will be ready to go this season with the reigning Mail Medallist and leading goalkicker back on deck.

The club will be a major chance for a top two spot and could exact revenge in the big dance.

Mesecke takes two straight

Tying in with Roopena’s improvement on the ladder, look for Roos star Clayton Mesecke to take his game to another level this year.

The athletic and strong-bodied onballer can be a major presence in the contest and up front and will single-handedly win games for his club.

McNamara breezes to goalkicking medal

West Whyalla captain Elliott McNamara had an outstanding 2022 season up front for the Dragons and with extra weapons in the midfield this season including Billy-Jo Russell, expect the exciting small to gain even more opportunity in front of the big sticks.

With the ability to take big marks and finish skilfully on either side of his body, McNamara could boot his way to lead all goalkickers.

PREDICTED LADDER

1. Central Whyalla

2. Roopena

3. Weeroona Bay

4. West Whyalla

5. North Whyalla

6. South Whyalla
