A former North Adelaide gun has returned to the Adelaide Footy League, signing for a reigning premier club on the rise.

Midfielder George Thring – who played over 100 games for the Roosters and has since spent time as playing-coach of Keith, winning a Mail Medal, has signed for new division three club Pembroke Old Scholars.

The Kings picked up former Sturt star Mark Evans and Thring’s brother, North Adelaide premiership captain Max Thring, heading into last season and ultimately won the division four premiership.

The addition will be a significant one for the club as it pushes for promotion to division two.

“I had been down in Keith for the last five years … I absolutely loved my time there, it’s such a fantastic community and I feel so welcome,” Thring said.

“The travel was taking its toll a little bit and obviously Max is at Pembroke – the thought of playing him again is exciting and I’m an old scholar so I know a few of the boys already playing there too.

“It was a hard decision to leave Keith because I have some really close friends there but I will be back to support them when I can.”

Thring has previously played in the Adelaide Footy League for Goodwood, winning a division one flag in 2020.

Although the midfielder was entering the veteran stage of his career, he believed he could have a similar impact at Pembroke OS.

“I still feel like I have a bit to offer the club and I think the team being put together is one which can achieve more premierships.

“I’ll be working as an assistant for Evo (Mark Evans) as well so hopefully I can help him a bit with the midfield and other areas which need some finetuning.

“I’m really excited to play footy around the corner from home with a great bunch of fellas.”

While the Kings had just come off of a premiership-winning year, Thring’s ambitions remained as high as possible.

He said moving up to the very top of the league was the ultimate goal.

“Obviously we are going out to win as many games of football as possible and if that translates into a premiership, then fantastic,” Thring said.

“The aim for the club is to continue to move up the divisions so I would love the challenge of developing some of the younger guys to play a brand of footy which will be successful in div three, two and one.”
