Former Adelaide United midfielder Fabian Barbiero signs for SA Premier League club MetroStars

FABIAN Barbiero will use the disappointment of being released by Adelaide United to fire MetroStars' assault on next season's Premier League title.

FABIAN Barbiero will use the disappointment of being released by Adelaide United to fire MetroStars' assault on next season's Premier League title.

The midfielder's 97-game A-League career was cut short in July when the Reds opted not to renew his contract.

But after a short stint with Croydon Kings at the tail end of last season, Barbiero last week agreed to return to Metro where he played from 2006-2007.

"I want to win things with Metro - some medals would definitely be nice," the 29 year old said.

"I have some good memories and played with some good people here so it was an easy decision to go back.

"They're a great club and they're like a family."

Metro won the minor premiership last year, finishing the regular season 13 points clear of Adelaide Blue Eagles.

But after failing to win any of its three playoff matches, the Klemzig-based club bowed out in the preliminary final.

Barbiero said he hoped to combine with the club's other major off-season recruit, striker Alex Capel from Cumberland United, to go one better in 2014.

"I want to bring some experience to some of the younger kids here and try to help them get better," he said.

"We've started pre-season and I've got the buzz back and it's always a good feeling to be out training."

After six seasons as a professional footballer, Barbiero said the transition back to part-time soccer last season was challenging.

"It is tough and obviously it's a different level," the one-cap Socceroo said.

"There's a lot of expectation and you've got a lot of eyes on you so it is a challenge, but it's still really enjoyable.

"There's a whole lot of talent out there (in the local leagues) that is capable of playing at the next level."

While focussed on next season's Premier League campaign, Barbiero said he had not ruled out a return to the professional ranks in the future.

He said good form with Metro would be the best way to catch the eye of interstate or overseas clubs.

"I still feel I've got a few more good years left in me.

"I'm never going to throw in the towel and I still have the drive."
