Football Federation SA launches Ladybirds girls soccer program

FOOTBALL Federation SA has launched a girls soccer program aimed at producing the next generation of Matildas.

FOOTBALL Federation SA has launched a girls soccer program aimed at producing the next generation of Matildas.

Ladybirds began last month helping five to 11 year olds take their first steps in the world game.

FFSA female participation officer Susan Bassett hoped the initiative would boost participation numbers and create pathways for women.

“We want to provide an introduction to the game for young girls who have never played before or might have played before but don’t want to play with the boys,” Bassett said.

“It’s all about having fun in a friendly environment and learning the basic skills of football.”

The 10-week program offers skill development and small-sided games for participants.

Courses have been held at Burton, Marion and Edwardstown with plans to expand to O’Sullivan Beach.

“Hopefully from this some of the girls will join a local club and get involved in a soccer league,” Bassett said.

“The idea is to increase the number of girls playing soccer and get them into women’s football.”

Adelaide United W-League players including Monique Ianella and Kelly Barltrop have worked as guest coaches at sessions.

Bassett said the program, along with FFSA’s appointment of Lady Reds coach Ross Aloisi as head of women’s football, were geared towards producing SA players for the national women’s team.

“The more we can get playing at a young age, those players are going to continue to feed through the age groups and hopefully go on to be some of the next Matildas,” she said.
