Duane Edwards, brother of ex-Crows star Tyson Edwards, ready to bowl in new SA Super League

HIS brother is a Crows premiership star. Now Duane Edwards – the sibling of Tyson Edwards – is chasing glory … in lawn bowls’ new SA Super League.

HIS brother is a Crows premiership star and SA Football Hall of Fame member.

But Duane Edwards – the sibling of Tyson Edwards – is chasing glory in lawn bowls.

Edwards, 49, will take part in bowls’ new SA Super League tonight after being selected as a marquee player for Eastern Raiders.

The franchise-based competition, which aims to help more Croweaters gain national selection, will feature eight regional teams battling in a six-week winter tournament.

Edwards reckons his side has a good chance of winning the inaugural title.

“We will be untouchable,” Edwards says.

The older Edwards sibling did play football – he captained West Adelaide’s under-19 and reserves teams before fronting up in the Bloods’ league team from 1987-90.

But he retired from the game at age 25 following a series of knee operations and turned to bowls.

Edwards, who plays for Tailem Bend, hopes the new league will gain the sport more exposure and get more young people involved.

“Bowls has always been viewed as ‘you’ve got to be old to play’, but that’s slowly changing and this is going to be good,” he says.

Cath Greenslade and her son, Danyon, will also feature in the inaugural tournament – on different teams.

Mallee Pirates chose Cath in the draft last month with pick nine, while Danyon’s selection came when the Eastern Spartans called his name at No. 23.

“I’m excited to see how I match up against her and see who gets the bragging rights in the family,” Danyon says.

The league begins under Salisbury Bowling Club’s all-weather dome tonight at 6pm.

It will culminate with a grand final in September.
