A former AFL player and national media personality has announced his intentions to play for the Elizabeth Football Club in 2024.

Former Carlton, Gold Coast and Norwood player Daniel Gorringe, now known for his nationwide footy media presence and as the host of podcast ‘Dan Does Footy’, said he has been “very keen” to play a one-off for the division six Adelaide Footy League club since seeing its record 516-0 loss to Fitzroy on Saturday.

The Eagles experienced a mass player exodus shortly before the season and has been making up the numbers in the competition since, but has received significant support since its loss to the Lions.

“It’s not often you see a team lose by that much and not even kick a goal – I felt pretty bad for them,” Gorringe said.

“It’s definitely not much fun at all when you’re getting beaten by that much.”

Gorringe, who played his junior footy for Tea Tree Gully and then Norwood, said he was excited by the opportunity to get back involved in SA footy.

“There definitely is a bit of a connection. Not much is motivating me to put my boots back on at all considering how my body has held up during and after my AFL career but I think it would be a great opportunity to give back to a local league I started in.

“I’m very keen to play at the footy club and help the boys to at least boost the morale a bit.”
A dominant forward/ruck utility in his day, Gorringe would provide a major boost for Elizabeth on the field, but league and club approvals would be needed for him to be eligible.

He said he would still look to get involved with the club if he was not able to play.

“I’m keen to pull the boots on but there are some hurdles to overcome,” Gorringe said.

“If the league doesn’t want it then we’ll figure out another way to get involved and help the club out.”

Elizabeth has conceded a total of 1,424 points through its first four games of the division six season and will face Adelaide Lutheran this weekend.
