Chloe Scheer overcomes ACL injury to realise AFLW dream and be selected by the Crows

Rising star Chloe Scheer has landed at the Crows’ AFLW nest despite spending the past year sidelined with an ACL injury.

Crows welcome new AFLW draftees

CHLOE Scheer was emerging as one of the state’s best female footballers – on track to be selected at last year’s AFLW draft.

But coming off two under-18 best and fairest medal wins and an SANFLW rising star award, the Modbury midfielder was dealt a major blow.

Scheer, of Gawler, ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament while playing for the Hawks in July last year.

The injury kept her on the sidelines for the past 15 months but it did not stop the Crows from selecting her with pick No. 37 at the national women’s draft in Melbourne last week.

Scheer, who still managed to claim the under-18 best and fairest medal again last year, was overwhelmed with emotion after being drafted.

“It was unreal,” says Scheer, who will be ready to resume from her knee injury in pre-season.

“I did actually get quite emotional because of my knee and being out for so long.

“It (the knee injury) was a massive push-back and if it wasn’t for my knee I probably would’ve been playing last year.

“But to get here now and get through all the rehab, I just couldn’t be happier.

“My passion for the game got me through it and I’m stronger than ever.”

Scheer took home the state league’s inaugural Star Search award for the best player under 21 in 2017 after a breakout campaign with North Adelaide.

Once the SANFLW season ended that April, she returned to the Adelaide Footy League with Modbury and that was when she hurt her left knee.

The ACL injury occurred just before Scheer was set to feature with the Central Allies – a team made up of players from SA and the NT – at the national under-18 championships.

“I actually thought I broke my leg from the feeling I had,” Scheer says.

“I was very surprised being picked at number 37 and I thought I’d be picked towards the end, having not played any footy since last year.

“But I am keen to get back out there and play footy like I used to.

“I’ve been building my running and strength and I’ll be ready to go once pre-season starts.”
