Here is what caught our attention in round seven:

TIGERS ON A TEAR

The Broadview Football Club won seven games in division two to finish sixth in season 2022, and has already equalled that tally in 2022 – after seven weeks.

The Tigers have been on an early-season tear to take seven wins from their first seven games of the season and are fast-becoming the biggest success story of the year so far.

The side faced a big test in round one under new coach Matt Burgess, clashing with highly-touted Sacred Heart Old Collegians away from home, clawing their way to a two-point win.

Other than a 6-point home win over Athelstone in round four, it’s been relatively smooth sailing for Burgess’ men.

“It’s been very pleasing,” Burgess said.

“One of the best parts of it is the buy-in from the whole group, and the fact our Bs and Cs are playing really well too which shows we have a lot of depth.”

Broadview recruited hard in the offseason, with a clear goal of competing for the division two flag in 2022.

The Tigers added SANFL stars Nick Liddle and Xavier Gotch to their A Grade side, while former Crows forward Jared Petrenko was a late pickup.

All three, namely Gotch in the midfield, have been superstars to start the year, but Burgess said the big improvement had come from the youth.

“We’ve got some young guys playing their first years of senior footy let alone A Grade this year and getting a lot of drive out of them,” he said.

“Cooper O’Leary, Jaxzen Wilson and Lewis Saint have all been developing week-in, week-out and will continue to develop for us and push the rest which is really positive.”

The culture winning has helped to develop has been infectious at the club, according to Burgess.

He said the team and family environment had been key to the fast start.

“It’s been great to see how unselfish they are as a group – they’re all in it together and all about making each other better,” Burgess said.

“We’re really working hard on that as a whole club – it’s a really good atmosphere and every single team and member supports each other.

“We’re very excited about it all, but we also know that we need to stay level-headed and take each week as it comes if we want to be truly successful.”

LAST CLUB STANDING

Broadview is one of four clubs who remain undefeated at this stage of the season, the other three being Golden Grove in division three, Trinity Old Scholars in division six and Greenacres in division seven.

Each club sits top of its respective division and have faced a test or two along the way.

Golden Grove’s story is similar to Broadview’s for 2022.

The club recruited heavily after the 2021 season, bringing in SANFL stars Cam Shenton and Lewis Johnston.

Both have been dominant in division three, each registering multiple best on ground performances.

Each club looks set for promotion, but which one will be the last to lose a game?
