Broadview has Adelaide Footy League win over Scotch taken away for Approved Player Points System breach

An Adelaide Footy League club has been stripped of a 56-point win after self-reporting a player points breach. And the incident has big consequences for the finals race and relegation battle.

Highlights: Broadview defeat Scotch OC but win overturned

Broadview has been stripped of its Adelaide Footy League win over Scotch Old Collegians on Saturday in a move set to play a major role in shaping the division two ladder.

The SA Community Football League on Thursday reversed the Tigers’ 15.14 (104) to 6.12 (48) victory and handed the win to Scotch following confirmation of a player points cap breach.

Broadview self-reported to the league on Sunday that it had fielded players worth 16 points under the Approved Player Points System (APPS), which is capped at 15.

The APPS is a rating system which allocates points to players recruited to a club, based on factors such as age and the level at which they had previously played.

Broadview escaped an additional $1000 fine due to self-reporting and transparency about its error.

In an email to club members, president Shane Hodby said the error occurred when two late outs to the A grade team were replaced by two B grade players, one who the club believed to be worth three points and the other zero.

“It was not until Sunday morning that we discovered that both of the players were in fact a three-point player and that the A grade team had taken the field with a total of 16 points.” Hodby’s email read.

“As you can imagine this has caused great embarrassment to the coaching staff who have accepted full responsibility for this error, which was committed with no intent to gain any advantage over the opposition, but occurred with the best of intentions.”

Messenger Community News has contacted Hodby for comment.

Players Tate Skinner, Ryan McCulloch, Sam Gruber and Adrian Stephens all carry three points while Patrick Fittock and Domenic Pratico attract two, according to Broadview’s teamsheet.

Before the result was overturned the Tigers were sixth on the ladder with 14 points, just behind fifth-placed Seaton Ramblers on 15.

Broadview now trail the Ramblers by more than one win.

Scotch OC was ninth – and in the relegation zone – but now move into eighth and ahead of Modbury by one point.

The Hawks and Scotch play each other at Modbury this Saturday.
