Brighton Bombers footballer Jay Boyle kicks huge 80m torpedo in Adelaide Footy League match

AN ADELAIDE footballer has booted an 80m torpedo goal that needs to be seen to be believed – and he doesn’t even remember it.

Brighton midfielder Jay Boyle kicked the massive spiral at Brighton Oval on Saturday from in line with the centre circle, as the ball flew through the goals at half the height of the posts.

A “four to five-goal” wind during the division two Adelaide Footy League match helped the ball on its way.

But Boyle, 20, well and truly got a hold of it for one of the longest goals in Adelaide footy ever recorded on video.

Boyle, an in-and-under midfielder, won a clearance from the centre bounce, broke clear and, off just a handful of steps, put his laces through the footy.

Incredibly, he does not remember the goal at all because he was concussed minutes before the kick.

“I don’t remember a whole lot actually – basically nothing,” Boyle says.

“I copped a knock and got concussed in the last quarter, a bit before the kick, but just got up and kept on going.

“I was pretty dazed and it wasn’t until after the game I kind of came to a bit more and the boys were telling me all about it.”

Boyle remembers watching the video back and being surprised at the distance of his bomb.

“I don’t really get onto too many torps,” he says.

“It was just a rushed kick out of the stoppage I think.

“I was probably just trying to get as much distance on it as possible but probably not thinking goals.

“Lucky they had the video going.”

Brighton coach Joel Tucker calls Boyle’s kick as “an absolute mongrel floater”.

“Unbelievable would be the way to describe it I reckon,” Tucker says.

“It was pretty windy early, probably a four to five-goal breeze, but at that point it had actually died down a fair bit.”

Bombers players and members will gather at Brighton Oval tonight to measure the massive kick as many place cheeky bets on its distance.

Brighton president Kym Steer says his money is on 82m.

“It was absolutely incredible,” Steer says.

“I had just finished a stint commentating and came down and saw it.

“He just set sail.

“The funny thing was it wasn’t even a perfect spiral – it had a bit of wobble to it but just kept going and going.”

The Bombers, sitting second in division two, took the crucial win against fourth-placed PHOS Camden, 15.8 (98) to 10.16 (76).

Boyle, who won Glenelg’s reserves best and fairest in 2016, also kicked another major and was named third-best for Brighton.

He has featured in two reserves games for the Bays in 2018 but has since decided to return to Brighton full-time and looms as a hot favourite for the Bombers’ MVP this season.
